2024 Summer Exhibition: “The Toy Canvas: Artists at Play”

This summer, the Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts has curated a one-of-a-kind exhibition that features toys as contemporary art. “The Toy Canvas: Artists at Play” features toys in photography, sculpture, mixed media and more.

As artists and their works have evolved through the decades, so have the materials they utilize. From canvas to marble to bronze, the options can be endless. This exhibition examines the work of artists who use toys to produce inventive works that address “the kid in all of us.”

These engaging artworks invite the viewer, young and old, to reimagine how we play and the toys and memories of our childhood. It explores the theme of play, with art by FriendsWithYou, Mitchel Wu, Herb Williams, Tim Howell and Michelle Brooks from FOX’s LEGO® Masters, Madame Alexander dolls, and many more!

“Much of this art has not been seen in Houston before, so this is a unique opportunity for all ages,” said Courtney Gardner, director of the Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts. “Visitors will be transported into a realm where nostalgia meets innovation, as artists breathe new life into the memories of our childhood. I hope you’ll join us as we rediscover the magic of play, and the infinite possibilities of our imagination.”

“The Toy Canvas: Artists at Play” includes an interactive play zone where visitors can discover their own creativity. The makerspace will have a variety of STEAM activities such as building challenges with LEGO® bricks and MAGNA-TILES®, art activities inspired by the exhibition, digital drawing tools, and a literacy zone.

In addition, the Pearl will host Wild Art Wednesdays again this summer, with free art activities every Wednesday from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., beginning June 5. Register for a 20-minute time slot at pearlmfa.org.

“The Toy Canvas: Artists at Play” opens at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 1 for a members-only preview, followed by the public opening at 11 a.m. Opening Day festivities will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is free, but registration is appreciated at pearlmfa.org.
