Construction Underway for New 50-Acre Detention Area in Katy Near Heritage Park West

October 23 2024

Construction is currently in progress on a significant public improvement project in Katy, which will feature a 50-acre detention pond, greenspace, park, and walking trails. This project is located between Katy Hockley Road and Katy Hockley Cutoff, north of Morton Road, and is expected to be one of the largest detention ponds in the city upon completion early next year.

Funded entirely by the MUD District, this project is part of a broader initiative to improve drainage standards in the area, particularly following the flooding issues experienced during Hurricane Harvey. Councilmember Chris Harris, who has been instrumental in advocating for enhanced drainage solutions, emphasized that the standards for development have been raised significantly since the storm. This detention pond is designed to meet the increased requirements for drainage and greenspace that adjacent neighborhoods must adhere to.

Harris noted that rather than allowing smaller ponds scattered throughout the neighborhood to satisfy water retention needs, the city pursued a Project Development and Documentation (PDD) that would include a large public greenspace alongside the detention pond. The agreement reached with developers reflects a commitment to a coordinated approach in alignment with Katy's Master Park Plan. The city is also planning to provide parking on the west side of the site to facilitate public access to the new greenspace.

The detention pond being constructed will not only serve a crucial role in managing stormwater runoff but will also enhance the local environment, providing residents with recreational space. This project represents a proactive step towards improving both the drainage system and community amenities in Katy.
