Comal ISD Elementary School #22 Moves Forward in New Braunfels as Part of Voter-Approved Growth Plan

December 26 2025

Construction plans are in place for Comal ISD Elementary School #22, a new Pre-K through 5th grade campus designed to help the district manage sustained enrollment growth and provide relief to existing elementary schools in the New Braunfels area.

The new school will be built at 1664 Walker Run in New Braunfels, with construction scheduled to begin January 26, 2026, and completion targeted for July 16, 2027. The $65 million project is funded through public funds approved by voters and will add a 107,000-square-foot elementary campus to Comal ISD’s growing portfolio of neighborhood schools.

Plans for Elementary School #22 include classrooms, a gymnasium, kitchen and cafeteria, library, fine arts spaces, special education facilities, administrative offices, and comprehensive mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and technology systems. The campus is intended to serve students and families in a fast-developing area of New Braunfels while maintaining Comal ISD’s emphasis on student-centered learning.

Part of a District-Wide Growth Strategy

Comal ISD currently operates 21 elementary campuses serving more than 11,800 students in grades Pre-K through fifth grade, with a focus on the academic, emotional, and individual growth of each child. District leaders have consistently pointed to population growth and residential development as key drivers behind the need for new schools.

Elementary School #22 is specifically designed to provide enrollment relief to Johnson Ranch Elementary School, one of several campuses experiencing pressure from continued growth. The school is one of three new elementary campuses funded through the district’s 2023 Bond Proposal, Proposition A, which voters approved on May 6, 2023, with approximately 55 percent support.

What Proposition A Funded

Proposition A, totaling $560,564,863, was structured to address both growth and reinvestment across Comal ISD. In addition to Elementary School #22, the bond funds include:

New Facilities
  • Elementary School #21 (relief for Bill Brown Elementary)
  • Elementary School #22 (relief for Johnson Ranch Elementary)
  • Elementary School #23 (relief for Oak Creek and Freiheit Elementary Schools)
  • Middle School #9 (relief for Canyon Middle School)
  • A new Life Bridges campus, supporting young adults with disabilities as they build independence in family and community settings
Safety and Security Projects

More than $17 million allocated for district-wide safety improvements, including access control upgrades, fencing, video surveillance, emergency operations infrastructure, active threat notification systems, and intrusion detection enhancements.

District-Wide Investments

Replacement buses, land acquisition for future schools, and infrastructure projects to maintain long-term operational stability.

Existing Campus Improvements

Facility expansions, athletic upgrades, fine arts spaces, and lifecycle projects such as roofing, HVAC replacements, drainage, electrical systems, paving, and wastewater improvements across dozens of campuses.

A Community-Centered Investment

District officials have consistently emphasized that new elementary campuses are about more than square footage. Smaller class sizes, reduced overcrowding, and the ability to maintain strong connections between families and neighborhood schools remain central goals as Comal ISD expands.

Elementary School #22 is expected to open in time for the 2027–28 school year, welcoming its first students as part of a broader, voter-supported plan to ensure Comal ISD keeps pace with growth while preserving the educational environment families value.

As construction moves closer, families in New Braunfels and surrounding areas can expect additional updates regarding attendance boundaries, campus naming, and opening timelines.
