City of Katy Selected for Harris County Precinct 4's Places 4 People Initiative to Redesign Katy Fort Bend Road
Harris County Precinct 4 Commissioner Lesley Briones recently announced that the City of Katy has been selected for the Places 4 People initiative, a transformative project aimed at redesigning Katy Fort Bend Road to enhance safety, mobility, and community access. This partnership is part of a larger $48.9 million investment to improve various communities within the precinct, with a focus on high-growth areas.
Katy Fort Bend Road, a key thoroughfare linking the Katy Freeway to the Katy Boardwalk District, has long been a vital artery for commuters, residents, and businesses. With its heavy traffic, the road’s redesign is a crucial step toward accommodating the area's growth while improving overall public safety and infrastructure. The project will include road widening, enhanced drainage systems, improved sidewalks, and better pedestrian access, all designed to make the area safer and more inviting for everyone.
“We’re focused on high growth, high needs areas, and we couldn’t think of a better partner than the City of Katy,” said Commissioner Briones. “This initiative illustrates what we can do when we do it together, to have Harris County partnering with the City of Katy, stretching taxpayer resources to deliver more. This is the power of partnerships, and I can’t wait to get started.”

The Places 4 People initiative is a major part of Commissioner Briones’ vision for Precinct 4, which aims to invest in infrastructure that promotes both community growth and sustainability. With a shared cost of $1.35 million between Harris County and the City of Katy, this collaboration exemplifies the power of local government partnerships to maximize resources and deliver meaningful results.
“This is a huge win for our city and its residents,” said Katy Mayor Dusty Thiele. “Katy Fort Bend Road is a heavily traveled area, and [this] partnership in a redesign study will help keep our community safe for years to come.”
The Places 4 People initiative will fund a total of 20 projects across Harris County Precinct 4, focusing on a range of community needs, from planning and design to construction and maintenance. With $17.7 million allocated from Harris County, and an additional $31.1 million from local partners, the initiative is poised to deliver significant improvements that align with the precinct's growth and development goals. The Katy Fort Bend Road redesign is one of several projects in the 2024 cycle, which also includes improvements to parks, pedestrian areas, and traffic corridors throughout the region.
As the City of Katy continues to expand, the partnership with Harris County aims to transform Katy Fort Bend Road into a safer, more accessible, and vibrant space for both local residents and visitors. The road redesign is expected to boost the area's connectivity, make the Katy Boardwalk District a regional destination, and enhance the quality of life for the growing community.
