March 18 2024

In a bid to boost sustainable energy, the City of Houston is offering discounted rates for solar panel installations to homeowners and small businesses in collaboration with the nonprofit organization, Solar United Neighbors (SUN). The initiative titled ‘Solar Switch Houston’ is in its third round and has already been hailed as a major success.

This strategically designed program simplifies the process for anyone interested in generating their own solar energy. Confident of the program's success, the City of Houston’s Interim Chief Resilience and Sustainability Officer, Nicholas Hadjigeorge stated, “We had great success with the first two rounds of Solar Switch Houston where residents were provided with a trusted information source and a substantial group discount." He further added, "I am confident that the savings attained in the third round of the program will play a crucial role for residents deciding if solar is the right choice."

One of the highlights of this phase of the program was the group-buying concept, which yields an average savings of $5,315 for each participant, making solar installations more affordable than ever. In addition, the Solar Switch program also provides crucial information about the federal solar investment tax credit (ITC) that can aid homeowners and small businesses save up to 30 percent on their total system cost.

America Garcia, the Texas Program Director for Solar United Neighbors, underscored the progressive vision behind the launch of this program. "Everyone deserves to benefit from generating their own solar energy. That’s why we designed Solar Switch – to make installing solar affordable and straightforward for more Houstonians than ever before," she said.

The City of Houston encourages homeowners and small business owners to take a leap towards cleaner energy and significant savings by registering for the Solar Switch Houston program on the official website at SolarSwitch.com/Houston.
