CFISD Swimmers, Divers Qualify for State Championships

Twenty-one CFISD athletes in 22 total events qualified for the UIL Swimming and Diving Championships following the Region V-6A Championships, held Feb. 2-4 at the CFISD Natatorium. CFISD athletes claimed 12 regional titles overall. 
 
The first- and second-place finishers in each region and next eight swimmers with the best regional finish times in the state advance to the UIL Swimming and Diving Championships, to be held Feb. 17-18 at the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin. In diving, the top three finishers in each of the eight regions advance to state.
 
The Cy-Fair High School girls’ 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay teams, comprised of Amy Nguyen, Ella Smoker, Maddie Nguyen and Sofia Luper, won both races at the Region V-6A Championships, held Feb. 2-4 at the CFISD Natatorium. The team set new CFISD Natatorium pool records in both events with times of (1:44.49) and (3:28.84), respectively.
 
Five new CFISD Natatorium pool records were set by CFISD swimmers at the Region V-6A meet:
  • Cy-Fair High School girls’ 200-yard medley relay –Amy Nguyen, Ella Smoker, Maddie Nguyen and Sofia Luper (1:44.49);
  • Cy-Fair High School girls’ 400-yard freestyle relay – Amy Nguyen, Ella Smoker, Maddie Nguyen and Sofia Luper (3:28.84);
  • Cypress Woods High School junior Ben Romig, 1-meter diving (532.30);
  • Cypress Woods High School senior Ben Scholl
o 50-yard freestyle (19.83); and
o 100-yard freestyle (43.71).
 
Scholl also set new Region V-6A records with his 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle times of 19.83 and 43.71, respectively.
 
The Cy-Fair High School girls’ swim team won the Region V-6A team championship, winning the title with 284 points.
 
The Cy-Fair High School girls won the Region V-6A team championship with 284 points. The Bridgeland High School girls scored 130 points to finish eighth overall.
 
The Cypress Woods High School boys’ swim team won the Region V-6A team championship, winning the title with 236 points.
 
The Cypress Woods High School boys scored 236 points to claim the Region V-6A team championship, while the Bridgeland High School boys scored 157 points to finish seventh overall.
 
Cy-Fair Head Coach Hannah Doré was named the Region V-6A Girls’ Swim Coach of the Meet.
 
Cypress Woods Head Coach Michael Marucci was named the Region V-6A Boys’ Swim Coach of the Meet. Cypress Woods senior Ben Scholl was named the Region V-6A Male Swimmer of the Meet and fellow Cypress Woods teammate junior Ben Romig was named the Region V-6A Male Diver of the Meet.
 
The following girls’ regional champions will represent CFISD at state:
  • Cy-Fair junior Ella Smoker, 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.88);
  • Cy-Fair sophomore Sofia Luper, 200-yard individual medley (2:02.96);
  • Cy-Fair junior Maddie Nguyen, 100-yard backstroke (57.87);
  • Cy-Fair 200-yard medley relay – Amy Nguyen, Ella Smoker, Maddie Nguyen and Sofia Luper (1:44.49);
  • Cy-Fair 400-yard freestyle relay – Amy Nguyen, Ella Smoker, Maddie Nguyen and Sofia Luper (3:28.84);
  • Bridgeland senior Emma Kinsey, 100-yard butterfly (54.67); and
  • Cypress Ranch High School senior Kelsey Roth, 500-yard freestyle (4:59.90).
The following girls will also represent CFISD at state:
  • Cy-Fair junior Ella Smoker, 200-yard freestyle (1:50.97);
  • Cy-Fair sophomore Sofia Luper, 100-yard freestyle (50.65);
  • Cy-Fair sophomore Amy Nguyen, 100-yard butterfly (57.10);
  • Bridgeland senior Emma Kinsey, 50-yard freestyle (23.75);
  • Bridgeland 200-yard freestyle relay – Sarah Klussmann, Emma Kinsey, Isabelle Fielding and Sophia Avery (1:38.50); and
  • Langham Creek High School junior Jailen Cervantes, 1-meter diving (334.80).

 

Cypress Woods High School senior Ben Scholl won two individual Region V-6A titles in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle, setting new CFISD Natatorium pool and Region V-6A records in both events with times of (19.83) and (43.71), respectively. Scholl will also compete in the 400-yard freestyle relay and the 200-yard medley relay at the UIL State Swimming and Diving Championships.
 
The following boys’ regional champions will represent CFISD at state:
  • Cypress Woods senior Ben Scholl,
o 50-yard freestyle (19.83); and
o 100-yard freestyle (43.71).
  • Cypress Woods senior Ben Romig, 1-meter diving (532.30);
  • Cypress Woods senior Daniel Choi, 500-yard freestyle (4:29.73); and
  • Cypress Woods 400-yard freestyle relay – Daniel Choi, Brock Borak, Brandon Morrison and Ben Scholl.
The following boys will also represent CFISD at state:
  • Bridgeland senior Levi Thome,
o 200-yard individual medley (1:49.35); and
o 100-yard freestyle (44.82).
  • Bridgeland junior Henry Hugele,
o 200-yard freestyle (1:40.93); and
o 100-yard backstroke (50.85).
  • Bridgeland 200-yard medley relay – Henry Hugele, Levi Thome, Branston Bui and Trey Moran (1:33.60);
  • Cypress Woods 200-yard medley relay – Brock Borak, Daniel Choi, Brandon Morrison and Ben Scholl (1:33.87);
  • Cypress Springs High School junior Caden Feith, 1-meter diving (441.00); and
  • Cypress Creek High School senior Wes Miles, 100-yard butterfly (49.61).
