CFISD Cancels Classes for Monday, Jan. 26 Amid Dangerous Winter Weather Threat

January 25 2026

As dangerously cold temperatures and icy conditions settle over the Greater Houston Area, Cypress-Fairbanks ISD (CFISD) has announced the closure of all schools and facilities on Monday, January 26, 2026, as a safety precaution. All after-school and extracurricular activities are also canceled.

In a statement released January 23, district officials emphasized that the decision was made “out of an abundance of caution” due to the severe winter storm forecast across the Greater Houston area.

Residents are encouraged to stay connected to the CFISD website, official social media pages, and SchoolMessenger notifications for the latest updates regarding school operations, including a decision about Tuesday, January 27, which the district says will be evaluated as more information becomes available on Monday.

Weather Outlook: Dangerous Cold & Lingering Ice

According to the National Weather Service – Houston/Galveston, Southeast Texas is currently under multiple winter weather advisories and warnings, including an Extreme Cold Warning through Tuesday morning, with wind chills ranging from 0°F to 15°F and hard freeze conditions expected nightly.

Despite the end of precipitation, icy roads, bridges, and overpasses remain a concern—especially in rural and elevated areas northwest of Houston. These hazardous travel conditions are expected to persist through at least Monday morning due to ongoing below-freezing temperatures.

The forecast low for Monday morning drops into the mid to upper teens across the region, including areas like Cypress, with only limited warming expected throughout the day.

What Parents and Students Should Know

  • All CFISD schools and buildings will be closed Monday, Jan. 26
  • No after-school events, games, or practices will be held Monday
  • Tuesday, Jan. 27 remains tentative — families should check official CFISD communication channels for updates

Keep students home, safe, and indoors; use this day to review emergency plans and check on neighbors, especially the elderly

Power & Safety Precautions

With ice accumulation, gusty winds up to 35 mph, and extremely low wind chills, the risk of power outages and tree limb damage increases. The National Weather Service urges residents to:

  • Protect exposed pipes from freezing
  • Bring pets indoors
  • Avoid any non-essential travel, especially overnight and early morning
  • Cover exposed skin when outdoors to prevent frostbite

How Long Will the Cold Last?

While temperatures are expected to remain frigid through Tuesday morning, gradual warming is forecast by midweek. Highs should return to the 40s and 50s by Wednesday, though light overnight freezes could continue in some areas through Thursday.
