Celebrate Juneteenth at the First Annual Katy, Texas Juneteenth Parade & Festival
On June 19, communities across the country will come together to celebrate Juneteenth, a federal holiday in the United States that commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans on June 19, 1865. For the first time, the Katy Texas African American Heritage Society will host its own Juneteenth celebration right here in Katy, with a special emphasis on the rich history of the early Black pioneers who called Katy home.
The community is invited to join this milestone celebration at Woodsland Park in Katy on Monday, June 19 with a kick-off parade at 11:00 AM, followed by a lively festival from 12:00 PM until 3:00 PM. Local organizations, businesses and individuals will participate in the parade, which is still open for last-minute entries. The parade route starts on Pin Oak and Roberts, and will travel west to Danover and south down to Woodlands Park. Fort Bend County Sheriff Eric Fagan will be the official Juneteenth Parade Grand Marshal.
Following the parade, the festival will feature a special meet-and-greet with legacy families, a kids zone, vendor booths, games, arts and crafts, giveaways and prizes, free hot dogs, watermelon and red soda. Live music and entertainment will be provided by a wide range of local talent specializing in gospel, Zydeco and two-step music. Katy legacy families will also present a pop-up museum at the festival that will display photographs and artifacts collected from community members far and wide with a connection to Katy's black history, which dates back 154 years since emancipation in Katy.
