Celebrate Christmas Traditions Where Texas Was Born

November 11 2023

Silent Night and gunshots, festive music and solemn moments — an 1850s Texan Christmas experience! Discover the origins of many popular Holiday traditions at Washington-on-the-Brazos on December 8 and 9.

Located at 23400 Park Road 12 in Washington, Texas, Washington-on-the-Brazos gives visitors an up-close encounter with Texas history. At Candlelight Christmas, costumed interpreters bring to life the festivities of the season with musket-fire, music, dancing and more. Visitors are invited to step into the historic home of the last President of the Republic, Dr. Anson Jones, as the family enjoys their Christmas gathering. Sip a hot cup of cider, cozy up to the fire, and begin your holiday season with Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site.

Groups of 20 will leave every 15 minutes from the entrance of Barrington Plantation. Tickets can be purchased for time slots between 6:00 PM and 8:15 PM. General admission is $10.50, and kids five and under are free. Tickets can be purchased here.

The picturesque Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site gives visitors unique insights into the lives and times of the 59 delegates who met on that very spot on March 2, 1836 to make a formal declaration of independence from Mexico. From 1836 to 1846, the Republic of Texas proudly but precariously existed as a separate and unique nation. Washington-on-the-Brazos is, indeed, “Where Texas Became Texas.”

Washington on the Brazos State Historic Site is the core of the Republic of Texas Complex, which also includes Fanthorp Inn—a wonderfully preserved 19th century stagecoach inn located nearby in Anderson, TX.   A visit to this significant historic site is a must for all Texans and newcomers alike.

The grounds are open daily from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. and the Visitor Center is open from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. For more information about Washington on the Brazos, please visit wheretexasbecametexas.org
