CapMetro Approves Fare Increases Starting January 10

Austin
October 03 2026

CapMetro’s board approved its first systemwide fare increase since 2015 on September 28. New prices take effect January 10, 2027, followed by another increase in January 2029.

What riders will pay

Standard Local single rides will rise from $1.25 to $1.50 in 2027 and $2 in 2029. Local service includes buses, Pickup and UT Shuttles. The Local daily cap will increase from $2.50 to $3 in 2027, and the monthly cap from $41.25 to $49.50.

Commuter single rides, covering Local service plus Rail and Express, will increase from $3.50 to $4 in 2027 and $5 in 2029. Access single rides will rise from $1.75 to $2.25, then $3.25.

Reduced Fare eligibility expands to veterans and households at or below 150% of the federal poverty level. Current Equifare participants will move automatically into Reduced Fare without a new application or interruption in benefits.

The approved fare schedule lists all prices and discount eligibility.

Payment method affects fare caps

CapMetro’s Umo payment system lets riders pay per trip while accumulating credit toward daily and monthly caps. Once a cap is reached, additional eligible rides are free for the rest of that period.

Riders must choose the Umo app or a Reloadable Fare Card. Contactless credit or debit cards, phones and smartwatches provide daily capping on buses, but not monthly capping. Cash paid directly at the farebox does not count toward a cap.

For riders who prefer cash, funds can be loaded into Umo or onto a Reloadable Fare Card through participating retailers or the Transit Store. That preserves access to fare capping without requiring a bank card for every trip.
