Caney Pines Convention Center Named as $159 Million New Caney Venue Nears December Opening
For residents who have watched New Caney and the surrounding East Montgomery County communities grow rapidly in recent years, one of the area’s largest public development projects is beginning to look much less like a construction site and much more like a destination.
The East Montgomery County Improvement District announced Sept. 1 that its new $159 million convention center will be called Caney Pines Convention Center, giving a permanent identity to the 210,070-square-foot venue now entering its final phase of construction in Valley Ranch Town Center.
A grand opening celebration is planned for December, according to EMCID, and event bookings for 2027 are already underway.
The name is meant to connect what is being built for East Montgomery County’s future with the history that came before it. EMCID said its Board of Directors selected Caney Pines as a reference to the area’s logging heritage, pine forests, natural landscape and wildlife, as well as New Caney, one of the region’s earliest settlements.
For a community undergoing significant residential and commercial growth, that connection was intentional: a modern convention center designed to draw visitors from across the Houston region and beyond will carry a name rooted squarely in the place it calls home.
Caney Pines Will Bring Large Events to New Caney
Located at the intersection of Interstate 69 and the Grand Parkway, or SH 99, Caney Pines is positioned in one of East Montgomery County’s busiest growth corridors.
The facility was designed by Helman Hurley Charvat Peacock/Architects, Inc., or HHCP, and is being built by general contractor SpawGlass.
EMCID describes Caney Pines as the third-largest convention center in the Houston area and seventh-largest in Texas.
The centerpiece will be a nearly 55,000-square-foot ballroom and exhibition hall capable of accommodating more than 6,000 attendees. That space can also be divided into as many as seven smaller rooms, giving the venue flexibility to host events ranging from graduations and weddings to trade shows, conferences, business meetings and youth sports tournaments.
Plans also include nearly 20,000 square feet of meeting space and more than 40,000 square feet of pre-function, lobby and outdoor courtyard space.
Two signature meeting rooms will take advantage of views across Valley Ranch to the west and south, with a terrace providing additional outdoor gathering space.
The convention center also includes a 5,109-square-foot commercial kitchen, about 11,000 square feet of outdoor patio space and an attached multilevel parking garage with 811 spaces.
EMCID said newer design technology and equipment were incorporated to make the facility easier to reconfigure between large and small events, an important feature for a venue expected to serve both major regional gatherings and community-based functions.
For East Montgomery County residents, that flexibility could mean more graduations, banquets, school events, business functions and large celebrations can stay closer to home rather than moving farther into the Houston area.
Oak View Group Selected to Help Manage the Venue
One of the more important decisions surrounding Caney Pines is not just how it is being built, but how it will be operated once the doors open.
The EMCID Board approved a recommendation to enter exclusive negotiations with Oak View Group, or OVG, for third-party management of the convention center.
EMCID said OVG was selected following a competitive bidding process based on the company’s experience managing venues, as well as its background in marketing, sales, customer service, financial performance and developing destinations for tourism, conferences and major events.
“EMCID’s partnership with OVG represents an extraordinary opportunity for East Montgomery County to elevate our convention center from Day 1, attract world-class events, and provide a gathering place our residents deserve,” said Frank McCrady, President and CEO of EMCID.
For EMCID, the management partnership is intended to help the convention center begin attracting business quickly rather than spending its first years building systems, industry relationships and event pipelines from scratch.
“I’ve worked closely with OVG leadership on an interim basis for the past six months while framing policies and procedures and finalizing our venue needs prior to opening later this year, so I’m confident the management team they build here will be phenomenal,” said Kelley Mattlage, Chief Operating Officer of EMCID. “OVG’s proven track record in venue management gives us confidence that this partnership will deliver enhanced programming and significant economic benefits for our community.”

A Larger Piece of Valley Ranch's Growth
Caney Pines is being developed within Valley Ranch Town Center and the broader Valley Ranch Entertainment District, part of the expansive Valley Ranch master-planned development created by The Signorelli Company in New Caney.
Over the years, Signorelli has helped shape Valley Ranch into a major mixed-use destination along the I-69 and Grand Parkway corridor, combining retail, restaurants, entertainment, offices and residential neighborhoods in one of East Montgomery County’s fastest-growing areas.
The larger Valley Ranch development encompasses approximately 2.55 million square feet of retail, office, entertainment, restaurant and mixed-use space, according to EMCID, along with more than 2,000 single-family homes and 1,000 multifamily residences.
That setting gives Caney Pines a role beyond simply providing meeting space. Convention guests, tournament families and conference attendees will arrive in an area already designed to keep visitors nearby, with dining, shopping, entertainment and future lodging all within the broader Valley Ranch development.
For local businesses, that creates the potential for convention-center activity to spill beyond the venue itself, sending new customers into surrounding restaurants, retailers and entertainment destinations throughout New Caney and East Montgomery County.
The plans also reserve space for a future full-service conference hotel that would connect directly to the convention center.
In June 2026, EMCID released the first part of its Request for Qualifications and Proposals process for development of the hotel adjacent to the convention center and Valley Ranch Entertainment District. Hunden Partners is serving as EMCID’s development adviser and assisting with that process.
The hotel component could prove important for attracting larger conferences, sports tournaments and multi-day events, particularly those whose organizers want lodging, meeting space, dining and entertainment within the same immediate area.
EMCID Projects Billions in Long-Term Economic Activity
EMCID estimates Caney Pines could generate approximately $1.73 billion in net new spending within the district and $775 million in net new earnings over 30 years.
The district also projects the project could generate approximately $35.1 million in sales, hotel and venue taxes during that period.
At stabilization, EMCID estimates the project will support more than 500 direct and indirect full-time-equivalent jobs.
At the convention center itself, EMCID expects 13 management-level positions and approximately 50 to 75 part-time positions, including jobs in event operations, culinary services, banquets, housekeeping and parking.
The project is being supported through sales tax revenue bonds, tying its financing to the economic-development structure of the East Montgomery County Improvement District.
“Every construction milestone brings us one step closer to creating a venue that will serve future events, residents, attract visitors and strengthen East Montgomery County’s economy for decades,” McCrady said. “This project is about building lasting opportunity for the community.”
From Groundwork to a December Opening
Site preparation and construction began in late January 2025, and work has steadily progressed over the past 19 months.
Now, with the project entering its final phase, EMCID says construction remains on schedule for a December grand opening.
Event bookings for 2027 are already underway, meaning the economic and community impact of Caney Pines may become visible quickly once the doors open.
The convention center is expected to host a wide range of gatherings, including weddings, graduations, trade shows, business meetings, youth sports tournaments and large-scale conferences.
That range matters in a fast-growing part of Montgomery County where population, housing and commercial development have expanded rapidly but where large-scale gathering space has historically been more limited.
Why Caney Pines Matters for East Montgomery County
For New Caney, Porter, Splendora and surrounding communities, Caney Pines represents another sign that East Montgomery County is increasingly being developed as a destination rather than simply a place people pass through on the way to Houston.
The project also gives local families, schools, nonprofits and businesses something more immediate: a large, flexible gathering place close to home.
A high school graduation could share the same building that later hosts a trade show. A wedding reception could take place in a venue also designed to accommodate thousands of convention attendees. A regional tournament could bring visitors into nearby hotels, restaurants and shops while keeping families close to the Grand Parkway and I-69.
And while its size, management partnership, economic projections and ability to attract visitors will understandably receive much of the attention, its name keeps something distinctly local at the center of the project.
In a part of Montgomery County where pine forests, timber and the community of New Caney were part of the story long before Valley Ranch arrived, Caney Pines Convention Center is designed to carry some of that history into the community’s next chapter.
Residents can expect additional details as the December grand opening approaches, while organizations interested in future events can already submit booking inquiries through the East Montgomery County Improvement District.
