Bridgeland FFA Senior Chapter Conducting Team Earns State Banner
The Bridgeland High School FFA Senior Chapter Conducting Team placed fifth overall at the Texas Leadership Development Events (LDE) State Competition, held Dec. 1-2 at Sam Houston State University. The team’s fifth place finish brought home the chapter’s first state banner.
Chapter Conducting is one of several Leadership Development Events students can compete in at the district, area and state levels. LDEs focus on creating situations for FFA members to demonstrate their abilities in public speaking, decision making, communication and their knowledge of agriculture and FFA as an organization. Team and individual events are used to reinforce what is taught in FFA classes.
During the Chapter Conducting competition, teams conduct a mock chapter meeting to demonstrate knowledge of basic parliamentary law and the use of correct parliamentary procedures. At the conclusion of the meeting, team members are asked questions regarding parliamentary law.
The 10-member team advanced past the district and area competitions to advance to the state event, where they competed against 23 other teams from across the state.
The Bridgeland Senior Chapter Conducting Team members are:

- Sara Bean, treasurer;
- Kylie Siems, reporter;
- Olivia Cate, sentinel;
- Charlie Martinson, advisor;
- Nolan Newcomb, member;
- Deborah Watterson, member; and
- Addison Barlow, member.
“It is so hard to find the right words for this team because proud is just not enough,” said Shelbey Scardino, Bridgeland Senior Chapter Conducting Team coach. “For the past five years, I have trained the Senior Chapter Conducting Team at Bridgeland and each year I watch these groups grow and strive to achieve higher excellence. The students have spent the last five months practicing a minimum of six hours a week with me, reading their parliamentary procedure guide from cover to cover, dissecting hundreds of problems, saying their questions for hours and striving to be nothing less than perfect. We started the season as 11 individuals and have grown into one team. I could not be prouder of the hard work, dedication, drive and determination these 10 students have shown me. This group made chapter history by being our first team to make it to the state finals and brought home Bridgeland FFA’s first state banner! It was an absolute honor to coach this team and I cannot wait to see what the future holds.”
