Bridgeland, Cy-Fair Marching Bands End Season as 6A State Finalists
The Bridgeland and Cy-Fair high school marching bands wrapped up a successful season at the UIL Class 6A State Marching Band Championships, advancing to the Finals Round on Oct. 31 at the Alamodome in San Antonio and finishing among the top 14 Class 6A marching ensembles in Texas.
The two helped end a historic marching band season for CFISD, as they were the district’s first state Finals Round participants since 2006. In all, CFISD advanced three marching ensembles (Bridgeland, Cy-Fair andCypress Woods high schools) to the state championships for the third consecutive year.
The same trio of bands advanced in consecutive years.
“I’m so proud of our students and staff, parents and community to be able to perform and achieve at such a high level,” said Shawn McAnear, Bridgeland head band director. “To be named a UIL Class 6A Texas State Finalist is one of the highest honors a marching band can earn.”
All three performed their respective shows and joined 40 other Class 6A bands from across the state during preliminary round competition on Oct. 30. Bridgeland and Cy-Fair advanced to the Finals Round, placing 10th and 11th for CFISD’s first qualifiers in 17 years.
Langham Creek High School placed sixth in 2006 in Class 5A, then the state’s largest classification, and finished fourth in 2004.
During the 2020 contest season, the UIL did not hold separate preliminary and finals rounds at the state championships. Cypress Woods and Bridgeland both participated and Cypress Woods placed 10th, earning a “finalist” designation.
The 2023 state contest marked the fourth consecutive state bids for Bridgeland and Cypress Woods and the fifth overall appearance for the Cypress Woods program. Cy-Fair competed for the seventh time in program history and second at state.
“Today is a historic day in our band program,” said John Nelson, Cy-Fair head band director. “Our band has decades of excellence to be proud of, but today we broke new ground, conquered new objectives and even made some dreams come true. I am so proud of our kids.”
