For families looking for something close to home this fall, October at Barbara Bush Branch Library offers the kind of calendar that can fill an afternoon, help a child discover a new interest or give an adult a chance to learn something useful.

The Spring-area branch has planned programs for nearly every age group throughout October 2026, including Halloween activities, early literacy programs, arts and crafts, STEM experiences, computer instruction, book clubs, teen activities and opportunities for adults to meet new people. For residents of Champions Park, the library’s schedule offers dozens of nearby options without requiring a major outing or a large entertainment budget. 

The month also carries extra meaning for the library itself. Barbara Bush Branch Library traces its history to 1976, when it was known as the Cypress Creek Library. Harris County Public Library records identify 2026 as the branch’s 50th year. In December 2002, the library moved next door into a facility roughly three times larger and took the Barbara Bush name, according to an HCPL account of the branch’s history. 

Today, the library at 6817 Cypresswood Drive includes children’s activity space, a Family Place Learning Center, computer lab, teen room, study and meeting rooms and maker equipment, along with technology classes and other community services. 

October begins with costumes, stories and a little Edgar Allan Poe

October opens with several programs that lean into both fall and the library’s family focus.

On Thursday, Oct. 1, the library will accept items for its Boo-tique Costume Shop beginning at 11 a.m., giving families an opportunity to contribute costumes before the Boo-tique Costume Shopping Day at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 2. The calendar also includes Stories Around the World at 11:15 a.m., Bonus Baby Time at 11:15 a.m., Bright Star Touring Theatre Presents: Hispanic Folktales at 11:15 a.m. and an Edgar Allan Poe Tea and Story Time for adults at 2 p.m. on Oct. 1.

Families will find familiar weekly programs throughout the month as well. Baby Storytime is scheduled every Monday at 10:30 a.m., Toddler Time every Tuesday at 10:30 a.m., Preschool Storytime every Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. and Tours & Tales every Thursday at 10 a.m. Pajama Storytime is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Oct. 5 and again Oct. 19.

Those recurring programs fit into a larger early-learning mission across Harris County Public Library. HCPL reported in January that all 26 of its full-service branches had become Family Place Libraries, with spaces, materials and programming designed to support young children and their parents and caregivers. 

Crafts, technology and after-school activities fill the first half of October

Adults interested in hands-on hobbies can join Be a Merribee: Knitting & Crochet Group every Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. or Fridays In Stitches every Friday at 1 p.m. Teens can attend weekly Felting sessions Tuesdays at 1 p.m.

The library will also offer Cricut Orientation for ages 16 and older at 2 p.m. Oct. 5, Gaggle of Google Apps for adults at 1 p.m. Oct. 6, Fall Salt Shaker Tassels during Tuesday Crafternoon at 3 p.m. Oct. 6 and Crafty Tween Tuesday for ages 8 to 12 at 5 p.m. that evening. Diamond Art Painting Club meets at 3 p.m. Oct. 7, while Can You Believe It!? is scheduled for ages 8 to 13 at 1 p.m. Oct. 8 and Magic the Gathering for Tweens begins at 4:30 p.m. Oct. 8.

For adults who want more confidence using everyday technology, the library has Computer Basics at 11 a.m. most Thursdays, excluding Oct. 22 and 29. A Smartphones class begins at 1 p.m. Oct. 13, while Microsoft Word instruction arrives later in the month.

Oct. 13 is particularly busy. Tuesday Crafternoon will feature Butterfly Wing Art at 3 p.m.; Challenge Island STEM begins at 3 p.m. for elementary-age children; Puppet Players Present starts at 5 p.m.; and the Evening Book Club meets at 6:30 p.m.

A place for teens, job seekers and adults looking to connect

Barbara Bush Branch Library’s October schedule stretches beyond traditional reading programs.

On Oct. 14, ages 12 to 18 can Carve Your Own Walking/Hiking Stick at 1 p.m. Adults can attend ACE That Interview! at 1:30 p.m., followed by the Role Players’ Guild at 5:30 p.m. and Speed Friending for ages 21 and older at 6 p.m. Family Fun @ Barbara Bush rounds out the evening at 6:30 p.m.

That mix of programs reflects the broader role libraries increasingly play as places to learn practical skills and simply spend time with other people. It is especially relevant for Champions Park residents searching for free or low-cost local activities that work for different generations of the same household.

Bonus Baby Time returns at 11:15 a.m. Oct. 15, followed by Cruisin’ w/ Ms. Caroline for ages 7 to 12 at 1 p.m., a Plant & Seed Swap for teens and adults at 2 p.m. and Hedgies Day Out for families at 4:30 p.m. Teens can return for Unboxed: Teen Makers at 11 a.m. Oct. 16.

Celebrating 50 years with a nod to the 1970s

The branch’s golden anniversary becomes part of the programming during the second half of the month.

Adults can attend Painting w/ Pam at 5 p.m. Oct. 19. On Oct. 20, teens ages 12 to 18 can Felt a Tote at 1 p.m., while adults can make Thank You Cards for the Friends during Tuesday Crafternoon at 3 p.m.

Then comes a distinctly anniversary-themed activity. Barbara Bush Branch 50th Anniversary DIY: Gold Leaf Pumpkins begins at 2 p.m. Oct. 21. Diamond Art Painting Club follows at 3 p.m., the YAKS Program: Young and Keeping Secrets for girls ages 12 to 18 begins at 4:30 p.m., and AI Made Simple for adults starts at 6 p.m.

The anniversary theme continues Oct. 22 with Barbara Bush Branch 50th Anniversary: Commemorative 70’s Shrinky Dinks at 1 p.m. for ages 12 to 18, a fitting reference to the decade when the original Cypress Creek Library opened.

Also on Oct. 22, adults can attend Basic Word Part A at 11 a.m. and the Afternoon Book Club at 2 p.m. The branch’s Afternoon Book Club has roots dating to 2003, shortly after the expanded library opened under the Barbara Bush name. 

Books, movies, music and creative outlets round out the month

Movie Night @ Barbara Bush will feature The Librarians documentary at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, with the program listed for all ages. The Journaling Group meets at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24.

Microsoft Word, Level 2 begins at 1 p.m. Oct. 27, followed by Halloween Potion Bottles during Tuesday Crafternoon at 3 p.m. and Puppet Players Present for families at 5 p.m.

On Oct. 28, adults can try Introduction to Basic Songwriting w/ Bob Pryor at 1 p.m. Children ages 6 to 12 can participate in Wags & Tales at 4:30 p.m., while teens ages 12 to 18 can attend Draw & Chill at 5 p.m. Role Players’ Guild meets at 5:30 p.m.

The final Thursday of October brings another Stories Around the World program at 11:15 a.m., Basic Word Part B for adults at 11 a.m., Bad Art Society for adults at 4 p.m. and Pages N’ Popcorn for ages 8 to 12 at 5 p.m. on Oct. 29.

Halloween week ends with First Responders’ Trunk-or-Treat

One of the month’s most broadly family-oriented events arrives just before Halloween.

First Responders’ & Trunk-or-Treat begins at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 30. Later that afternoon, children can bring a favorite plush companion to the library’s Stuffy Sleepover at 3 p.m.

Together with the Boo-tique Costume Shop at the beginning of the month, those events give local families multiple ways to make Halloween part of a community outing rather than simply a single night of trick-or-treating.

What residents should know before visiting

Some library programs require a little planning. According to the October calendar, adult events marked by an asterisk require registration, while children’s events marked by an asterisk require tickets distributed 15 minutes before the program begins. Residents may want to check individual event listings before heading out, particularly for programs likely to draw larger crowds.

Barbara Bush Branch Library will be closed Monday, Oct. 12, and is scheduled to reopen at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13.

The Friends of the Library Bookstore also remains another way for visitors to support the branch. Proceeds from bookstore sales are used to enhance the library and its programs for all ages. October bookstore hours are 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesdays, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays. The bookstore is closed Mondays.
