Austin’s Camacho Activity Center Celebrates 25 Years of Community, Outdoor Adventure, and Youth Programs

Austin  /  Austin
April 28 2026

For generations of East Austin families, the Lorraine “Grandma” Camacho Activity Center has been more than a recreation space—it’s been a place where kids gain confidence, neighbors connect, and community identity is strengthened through shared experiences outdoors.

Now, that legacy is reaching a meaningful milestone.

Austin Parks and Recreation is inviting residents across Central Texas to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Lorraine “Grandma” Camacho Activity Center on Saturday, May 16, 2026 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at 35 Robert T. Martinez Jr. Street in Austin. The free, family-friendly event reflects not just a celebration of the past, but a continuation of a mission rooted in access, opportunity, and belonging.

For many local families, this isn’t just an event—it’s a chance to reconnect with a place that has helped shape childhoods, friendships, and lifelong skills.

Honoring the Woman Behind the Mission: Lorraine “Grandma” Camacho

The center’s story begins with Lorraine “Grandma” Camacho, a longtime East Austin resident whose impact still echoes throughout the community today.

Camacho lived on Canterbury Street for more than 40 years and became known as a trusted, steady presence for neighborhood children. She dedicated decades of her life to supporting youth through volunteer work with local schools, PTAs, and the Reading Is Fundamental program, always advocating for education, safety, and opportunity.

Her home was also one of Austin’s first McGruff Houses, offering a safe haven for children in need—an early example of the kind of community-centered care that would later define the activity center named in her honor.

When the Lorraine “Grandma” Camacho Activity Center opened in September 2000, it wasn’t just a facility—it was a continuation of her life’s work.

Today, that same spirit of care and connection remains woven into every program offered there.

What to Expect at the Camacho Activity Center 25th Anniversary Celebration

The Camacho 25th Anniversary Celebration is designed to reflect exactly what the center does best: bringing people together through hands-on, outdoor experiences that are accessible to all.

Residents can drop in anytime during the event and enjoy:

  • Guided kayaking trips on the hour
  • Guided bike rides on the hour
  • Archery activities
  • Field day games and family-friendly competitions
  • Camacho film screenings and throwback videos
  • Free food and beverages

All equipment will be provided, though participants are welcome to bring their own bikes or gear. The event is open to all ages, with children required to attend alongside a parent or guardian.

Those planning to attend are encouraged to RSVP in advance to help organizers prepare.

More Than a Celebration: A Reflection of Ongoing Impact

While the anniversary highlights the past, the Lorraine “Grandma” Camacho Activity Center continues to serve as one of Austin’s most dynamic hubs for outdoor recreation and youth development.

Through Austin Parks and Recreation, the center offers a wide range of programs that support families year-round, including:

  • Summer Camp 2026, running from June 8 through August 12, with structured outdoor programming for kids
  • School Break Camps aligned with Austin ISD holidays
  • Single-Day Camps for out-of-school days

  • Learn-2-Ride, helping children build biking confidence
  • Youth and Teen Bike Clubs focused on skill-building and exploration
  • Family Kayaking and adult programs like Varsity Kayaking, Hiking, and Biking for ages 50+

The center also supports nature-based education, cultural arts programming, adaptive recreation for individuals of all abilities, and a standout youth filmmaking program with more than 100 films in its online catalog.

For many families searching for Austin summer camps or youth outdoor programs in East Austin, the Camacho Activity Center remains a trusted and accessible option.

Why This Milestone Matters for Austin Families

As Austin continues to grow, spaces like the Lorraine “Grandma” Camacho Activity Center play a critical role in preserving community connection and ensuring access to meaningful experiences for all residents.

The center’s focus on outdoor activity, youth engagement, and inclusive programming supports not only physical health, but also confidence, independence, and social connection—especially for children growing up in an increasingly digital world.

For parents, it offers a place where kids can safely explore, learn, and build lifelong skills. For longtime residents, it represents continuity and shared history. And for newcomers, it provides an entry point into the heart of the East Austin community.
