Austin Community College Launches Monthly Advanced Manufacturing Cohorts to Meet Central Texas Workforce Demand

Austin  /  Austin
March 12 2026

As Central Texas continues to grow as a hub for semiconductor technology, robotics, and high-tech manufacturing, Austin Community College District (ACC) is expanding opportunities for residents looking to enter one of the region’s fastest-growing industries.

The college announced that new cohorts for its Advanced Manufacturing Production (AMP) program will begin every month throughout 2026, offering students a relatively quick pathway into high-demand careers in advanced manufacturing, semiconductor production, and industrial technology.

For many Austin-area residents seeking stable careers with growth potential, the program offers an accessible entry point. The 6–8 week training program, which costs approximately $950, focuses on hands-on learning and practical skills designed to prepare students for immediate employment in the region’s rapidly expanding manufacturing sector.

A Growing Industry Driving Local Opportunity

Advanced manufacturing has become a cornerstone of the Central Texas economy. According to the Austin Regional Manufacturers Association, roughly one-third of the city’s major employers are manufacturers, including companies such as Samsung Semiconductor, Applied Materials, and Tesla.

These companies rely on a workforce skilled in modern production technologies, robotics, electronics, and quality control — areas where demand continues to outpace the available labor pool.

ACC’s AMP program was developed in collaboration with local employers to address those workforce gaps. Students train in state-of-the-art classrooms and labs, learning skills such as computer-aided design, production processes, electronics systems, and manufacturing quality standards.

The program emphasizes hands-on experience so students graduate with the technical competencies employers are actively seeking.

Fast Training With Long-Term Career Potential

While the AMP program provides a short-term entry into the workforce, it is also structured to support long-term career advancement.

Students can stack credentials over time, beginning with short-term certificates and advancing toward an Associate of Applied Science degree and eventually a Bachelor of Applied Technology in Manufacturing Engineering Technology.

This layered credential system allows workers to enter the workforce quickly while continuing to build education and skills throughout their careers.

Advanced manufacturing is already a $12.5 billion industry in Central Texas, and workforce projections suggest continued expansion as semiconductor fabrication facilities and technology manufacturing investments grow across the region.

Preparing Workers for the Semiconductor Boom

The demand for skilled technicians is expected to rise dramatically in the coming years. National workforce projections estimate that 109,000 semiconductor technician jobs could go unfilled by 2030, a gap that programs like ACC’s aim to help close.

ACC’s semiconductor training programs provide targeted instruction for those interested in entering the rapidly evolving chip manufacturing sector. The curriculum is aligned with industry needs and supported through partnerships with both technology companies and higher education institutions.

The program’s industry alignment has earned national certification from the National Institute for Industry and Career Advancement (NIICA), confirming that the training meets employer-defined knowledge, skills, and ability standards within semiconductor and advanced manufacturing careers.

The program has also received national attention, including recognition from former U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo, for its role in preparing workers for critical semiconductor supply chain jobs.

Expanding Access to Workforce Training Nationwide

ACC’s program is also part of a broader national initiative aimed at making advanced manufacturing education more accessible.

Through a partnership with Merit America and the America’s Frontier Fund (AFF) Foundation, the AMP curriculum will be expanded nationally to help low-wage workers across the United States access training programs at no upfront cost.

The goal is to help individuals who have historically been excluded from high-demand technology industries gain the skills needed for stable, well-paying careers.

For Austin Community College, the initiative reinforces its role not only as a regional workforce training leader but also as a contributor to the broader effort to strengthen the U.S. manufacturing workforce.

A Local Pathway Into a Global Industry

As Central Texas continues attracting major technology and semiconductor investments, programs like ACC’s Advanced Manufacturing Production training aim to ensure local residents have the skills needed to participate in that growth.

For many students, the program represents more than a certificate — it is a starting point for careers building everything from microchips and robotics to aerospace components and electric vehicles.

With monthly program start dates throughout 2026, prospective students have ongoing opportunities to begin training and enter one of the region’s most rapidly expanding industries.
