Austin Airport Breaks Ground on Six-Gate Concourse M
Austin-Bergstrom International Airport marked the groundbreaking for Concourse M on September 29, advancing a six-gate facility intended to preserve passenger capacity during the airport’s larger expansion.
The approximately 37,000-square-foot concourse will sit on the west side of the airfield and serve narrow-body aircraft. Construction is expected to begin soon, with an opening targeted as early as 2028.
Keeping capacity available during construction
Concourse M will provide relief while the airport builds the future 26-gate Concourse B and tunnel and remodels Concourse A.
A companion Maintenance Ramp Expansion will add six aircraft parking positions and expand space for up to 18 diverted aircraft. That project is scheduled for completion in 2027.
The airport identifies revenues, cash reserves, federal grants and future airport revenue bonds as funding sources for the two projects, with no local taxpayer dollars. The groundbreaking announcement marks a construction milestone, rather than the opening of new gates to travelers.
How passengers will reach the new gates
Travelers using Concourse M will still park, check in and pass through security at the Barbara Jordan Terminal. The new concourse will not have a separate public check-in or security checkpoint.
After security, passengers will go to Gate 13 and take an elevator or escalator to the ground-level holding area. A shuttle bus will carry them across the airfield to Concourse M. Arriving passengers will follow the route in reverse.
Some aircraft will use jet bridges; others will board through accessible ramps. Planned amenities include restrooms, a family restroom, a nursing room, Wi-Fi, food and drink options, seating and a pet relief area.
