Anthony, Hamilton, Sprague Win 2023 Middle School Volleyball Championships
The CFISD athletic department concluded its 2023 middle school volleyball season by crowning four outright district champions. The season featured new zone alignments for the 20 middle schools and a new playoff structure featuring tournaments to determine the four winning teams.
With Sprague Middle School opening in August as CFISD’s 20 middle school, the athletic department aligned the campuses geographically into four zones.
Zone alignments were:
- North Zone – Anthony Middle School, Salyards Middle School, Smith Middle School, Spillane Middle School and Sprague Middle School;
- South Zone – Bleyl Middle School, Campbell Middle School, Cook Middle School, Dean Middle School and Truitt Middle School;
- East Zone – Aragon Middle School, Arnold Middle School, Goodson Middle School, Hamilton Middle School and Labay Middle School; and
- West Zone – Hopper Middle School, Kahla Middle School, Rowe Middle School, Thornton Middle School and Watkins Middle School.
Anthony Middle School won both the 8A and 8B championships. Sprague Middle Schoolearned the 7A title, while Hamilton Middle School won the 7B championship.
The volleyball season was comprised of five non-zone games and four zone games.
District tournaments were held at the conclusion of zone play on Oct. 23, with teams seeded based on their respective record in the four zones. The top two teams from each zone advanced to the Championship Bracket Tournament.
“We’ve always had the ability to name our district champions in cross country, and now for the first time, we now have the opportunity to name district champions in our team sports, including volleyball,” said Virginia Flores, CFISD director of athletics. “It has been simply amazing to be able to implement district championship structures for our middle schools.”
The B-team tournaments were held Oct. 28 at Aragon (eighth grade) and Kahla (seventh grade). The A-team tournaments were held Nov. 11 at Hamilton (eighth grade) and Sprague (seventh grade).
Anthony’s 8A team defeated Goodson in the championship game. Hamilton finished third and Watkins won the consolation bracket.
Sprague defeated Salyards to win the 7A title. Spillane placed third and Watkins won the consolation bracket.
In the 8B bracket, Anthony defeated Salyards in the tournament final. Goodson placed third and Dean won the consolation bracket.
