A Morning of Remembrance: Community Breakfast to Celebrate Deputy Sandeep Dhaliwal’s Legacy in September

August 11 2025

On Saturday, September 27, 2025, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., the public is warmly invited to gather at Charles W. Austin Park for the Annual Breakfast Honoring Deputy Sandeep Singh Dhaliwal. This free community event welcomes everyone — from longtime residents to first-time attendees — to join in remembering a deputy whose life and service left an indelible mark on Harris County.

Deputy Dhaliwal, a 10-year veteran of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, patrolled neighborhoods across Northwest Harris County, including Copperbrook. On September 27, 2019, while conducting a traffic stop just outside Copperbrook, he was shot and killed in the line of duty. His death deeply shook the Sheriff’s Office, the Sikh community, and residents across Greater Houston.

As the first Sikh deputy in the history of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, Dhaliwal proudly wore his turban and beard in uniform, breaking barriers in law enforcement and fostering understanding across cultures. Known for his compassion, humility, and willingness to help anyone in need, he quickly became a symbol of unity — a person who saw beyond differences and worked to connect people from all walks of life.

In the years since his passing, Deputy Dhaliwal’s name has been honored in lasting and public ways. In December 2020, the Addicks Howell Road Post Office was officially renamed the Deputy Sandeep Singh Dhaliwal Post Office. And in October 2020, a portion of Beltway 8 near Highway 249 was renamed the HCSO Deputy Sandeep Singh Dhaliwal Memorial Tollway, ensuring that his service is remembered by thousands of Houstonians who travel it each day.

The annual breakfast at Charles W. Austin Park takes place near the memorial established in his honor — a place where neighbors, deputies, community leaders, and visitors can gather to reflect, share stories, and celebrate the values he lived by. Past events have included prayers from both Sikh and Christian faith leaders, personal tributes from colleagues and family members, and a warm breakfast featuring both traditional and Indian-inspired dishes.

This year’s gathering will continue that tradition, offering a space for fellowship, remembrance, and unity. Attendees are encouraged to bring friends, family, and neighbors, whether they knew Deputy Dhaliwal personally or simply wish to be part of honoring his life and the example he set.
