Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center Makes Urgent Appeal for Blood Donations Following Hurricane Beryl
The Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center, an essential lifesaving organization serving Houston and its surrounding communities, is making a plea to all residents following the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Beryl, which made landfall on July 8, 2024. The hurricane has significantly impacted the region's blood supply, leading to an urgent need for donors of all blood types.
Early July storm Beryl forced the cancellation of many blood drives throughout the city and resulted in the temporary closure of several donor centers due to blackouts, resulting in a critical drop in blood stocks. However, as the organization works diligently to ensure the health of the community, calls have been made for potential donors to step forward and help replenish the severely depleted supplies.
The Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center, which operates round the clock, seven days a week, was founded in 1975. As one of the largest community blood centers in the United States, it serves 170 hospitals and healthcare facilities in a 26-county area. The blood donated is used in surgeries, cancer treatments, and various medical procedures, thereby providing a vital lifeline for Houston’s health care industry.
Presently, several locations have restored power and are now open and ready for blood donations. These include:
