From Adversity to Achievement: Cameron's Inspirational Journey from Boys and Girls Country to Rice University Graduation

May 29 2024

Cameron, a former resident at Boys and Girls Country (BGC) in Hockley, has become the embodiment of resilience, grit and determination as she celebrates her recent graduation from Rice University. A double major in English and Art, Cameron's journey to this momentous occasion has been nothing short of inspirational.

At just 13 years old, with a history marked by abuse and displacement, she was left at the doorstep of BGC. The organization, devoted to providing stability, love, and compassion to children in need, gave her a fresh start. "At BGC, I never had to wonder if I was getting a meal. I never had to fear being hit if I spoke out of turn. I was shown love and support," Cameron shared, expressing how the residential community became a source of hope in her turbulent life.

Founded in 1971, Boys and Girls Country is a dedicated residential home providing care, education, and community to children aged 5-18 and young adults. Their comprehensive and trauma-informed model focuses on enhancement of physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of every child's life while keeping them in a family-like environment.

While at BGC, Cameron channelled her energy into her studies, a strategy that paid off when she graduated high school with stellar grades and secured a scholarship to Rice University. At college, despite the disturbances of the COVID-19 pandemic, she thrived. "I have always been a little shy, but I made an effort after COVID restrictions were lifted to get out of my comfort zone," she shared.

Cameron's drive to overcome her introverted tendencies resulted in her joining several on-campus organizations, stepping into officer roles within the Black Students Association and the African Student Association. This newfound confidence in her voice prompted Cameron to advocate for fair housing and campus safety before the school board. Her time at Rice also further developed her ability to critically engage with diverse perspectives.

The support Cameron received from BGC during her college journey was invaluable. BGC's unique College & Career program empowers young adults to continue their journey to success by providing opportunities for higher education, technical certification, military entry or the start of their career. "I always knew I could go to college, but BGC made it possible by helping me overcome my fears. Being able to come home to safety and support has changed my life,” she said.

Cameron's eyes are now set on the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), where she plans to pursue her dream of becoming a 3D animator. She wants to work for Disney, where she can inspire others through her creative character designs.

From her arrival at Boys and Girls Country to her graduation from Rice University, Cameron's story is a testament to the power of survival, resilience, and love. Her journey inspires hope, proving that with courage and support, anything is possible.
