Class of 2022 Graduates Celebrate $842,500 in CFEF Scholarships

August 11 2022

More than 140 Cypress-Fairbanks ISD graduates celebrated earning scholarships valued at $842,500 at the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation (CFEF) 2022 Scholarship Reception on Aug. 2 at the Berry Center.

The CFEF, which has awarded more than $11.5 million in scholarships to more than 2,300 CFISD graduates since its inception in 1970, welcomed families of the 142 recipients to the annual event.

Cy-Fair High School graduate Rebecca Morrison received the Kevin Borgfeldt scholarship, with which she has a personal connection. Borgfeldt was a drum major for the University of Houston’s Spirit of Houston band during Morrison’s parents’ freshman year of college. Borgfeldt was also a Cy-Fair High School band director.

scholarship, which holds a special, personal connection to her. Borgfeldt was a former Cy-Fair High
School band director and was a drum major at The University of Houston when Morrison’s parents
were freshman band members.

“It’s really special to receive this scholarship,” Morrison said. “When I was applying for scholarships, I saw Mr. Borgfeldt’s name and mentioned it to my parents, and it all clicked for me since I’ve heard about him before. It’s a full-circle moment for sure.”
Heather Bolton, who works as a crude reliability lead for ExxonMobil and is a Cypress Falls High School graduate, offered the keynote address. Bolton is also a past CFEF scholarship recipient and together with her husband, has funded a Bronze Endowed Scholarship.

“It’s an honor to be invited back and talk to this year’s scholarship recipients,” Bolton said. “The scholarship I received from the CFEF gave me the flexibility to explore my freshman year of college since I didn’t have to worry about paying for that year. I was able to take classes outside of my major which helped me realize what I wanted to do.”

The event allowed donors and mentors to meet with scholarship recipients, putting a face with the name on each side and helping start mentor-mentee relationships.

“Congratulations to our 2022 scholarship recipients,” said Mark McShaffry, CFEF chairman. “It’s an honor to celebrate their accomplishments and the incredible generosity of our endowment donors and foundation sponsors. The future holds many new and exciting experiences for our recipients. We wish them well as they embark on their next journey.”
