Williamsburg Settlement Entrance Flags Refreshed Through Community Effort and Operation Old Glory' Partnership

May 20 2026

For many Williamsburg Settlement residents, the flags waving above the community’s entrance monuments are more than landscaping details. They are familiar markers of home — greeting neighbors on morning commutes, welcoming families back after long days, and standing quietly through holidays, celebrations, and difficult moments alike.

This week, several of those entrance flags received a meaningful refresh through a community-wide effort that combined neighborhood pride, volunteer service, and a shared respect for patriotic traditions.

Four of Williamsburg Settlement’s five entrances feature esplanades with monument signage and flag poles displaying both the American and Texas flags. While the Williamsburg Settlement Community Improvement Association has historically purchased and maintained the flags, this latest round of replacements came with help from community partners and local volunteers dedicated to preserving the neighborhood’s appearance and traditions.

A team from Comcast, led by Lance Cone, donated and installed new American flags through the company’s outreach initiative known as “Operation Old Glory.” The program focuses on replacing worn U.S. flags while ensuring they are handled and retired according to proper flag etiquette and protocols.

Photos from the installation show volunteers carefully lowering the previous flags, folding them respectfully, and raising the new flags beneath bright blue skies at the Williamsburg Settlement entrances in Katy.

The effort also became a learning experience for younger residents involved in community service and scouting programs.

At the Colonial Parkway entrance, two worn Texas state flags were replaced by local Scouts and family volunteers, including Meredith from Cub Scout Pack 1001; Norah Gillogly and Eleanor from Girl Scout Troop 128077; Thomas Allaire from Cub Scout Pack 1001; along with Terrence Gillogly and Franklin Allaire. Despite windy conditions, volunteers took care to ensure the flags did not touch the ground during the replacement process.

The replacement Texas flags were donated by Representative Mike Schofield, whose contribution helped support the community beautification effort.

In neighborhoods like Williamsburg Settlement, where mature trees, established entrances, and longtime traditions help define the character of the community, small visual details often carry larger meaning. Well-maintained entrances contribute to neighborhood pride and help preserve the welcoming appearance residents value throughout the year.

The refreshed flags arrive just ahead of Memorial Day and the summer season, when patriotic displays become especially visible across Katy-area communities.

Residents who currently have worn or faded American flags displayed at their homes may also benefit from Comcast’s “Operation Old Glory” initiative. As part of the outreach program, Comcast is offering to replace weathered U.S. flags flown by residents in their yards.

As neighbors drove through the community this week, many were greeted by crisp new flags flying above the Williamsburg Settlement monuments — a simple but visible reminder of the volunteers, organizations, families, and local leaders who continue investing their time and care into the neighborhood.
