Why Clean Storm Drains Matter: How Lakes of Bella Terra Residents Can Help Protect Waterways and Prevent Flooding

April 07 2025

For residents of Lakes of Bella Terra and other Fort Bend County communities, maintaining clean storm drains is more than just a good practice—it’s essential to protecting homes, streets, and local waterways. According to Clean Bayous, debris like leaves, grass clippings, and pet waste can block storm drains, causing street flooding and funneling pollutants straight into the bayous that make up the Greater Houston area’s stormwater system.

Clean Bayous is a local initiative focused on preserving the health of Houston’s bayous by raising awareness about stormwater pollution and illegal dumping. In collaboration with local MUDs, like Fort Bend County MUD 133 that serves Lakes of Bella Terra, the nonprofit provides practical resources for residents, businesses, and local agencies on how to keep our waterways clean. Importantly, they emphasize that what goes into a storm drain doesn’t get treated—it flows directly into our streams and rivers.

In a region like Fort Bend, where many neighborhoods like Lakes of Bella Terra rely on these natural drainage systems, that’s a big deal. “When leaves and other debris block catch basins—also known as storm drains—it prevents water from properly draining off the streets,” the organization explains. “This can lead to localized flooding and even cause damage to homes and vehicles during heavy rain events.”

Beyond flooding, improperly discarded items like oil, lawn clippings, or even pet waste carry harmful bacteria and chemicals into the bayous. These pollutants pose serious threats to aquatic ecosystems, degrade water quality, and make recreational activities like fishing and swimming unsafe.

What Can Residents Do to Help?

Clean Bayous encourages residents to take simple, proactive steps that make a big difference:

  • Sweep, collect, and bag leaves and yard waste rather than blowing them into the street.
  • Compost grass clippings or use them as mulch in your yard.
  • Never pour chemicals or waste down storm drains.
  • Pick up after pets during walks.
  • Reduce fertilizer and pesticide use—and always follow label instructions.
  • Direct downspouts into grassy areas or consider installing a rain garden.

Homeowners are also encouraged to report clogged or damaged drains to local authorities. In some cases, taking action could help prevent flooding during the next big rainstorm.

The CleanBayous.org website also features an anonymous reporting tool for illegal dumping and offers detailed guidance on protecting our bayous for future generations. Visit cleanbayous.org/report-illegal-dumping to access the confidential form.

For a community like Lakes of Bella Terra, known for its thoughtful design and natural surroundings, being mindful about stormwater drainage is part of keeping the neighborhood beautiful—and safe. Visit CleanBayous.org to learn more and get involved.
