Westlake Junior Fire Academy Returns This Summer, Giving Local Youth a Behind-the-Scenes Look at Fire and EMS Service
For many children, seeing a fire truck race through the neighborhood sparks curiosity. This summer, teens in Westfield will have a chance to go beyond the lights and sirens and experience what life is really like inside a fire station.
The Westlake Fire Department has opened registration for its 6th Annual Junior Fire Academy, a five-day summer camp designed to introduce youth ages 12 to 15 to the world of firefighting, emergency medical services, leadership, and public service.
Set for July 27-31, 2026, the academy offers a unique opportunity for local teens to spend a week learning directly from firefighters, paramedics, and community partners while participating in hands-on activities that mirror real-world emergency response situations.
For families in Westfield served by the Westlake Fire Department, the program provides more than just a summer activity. It gives young residents an opportunity to build confidence, develop teamwork skills, and gain a deeper appreciation for the people who help keep their community safe every day.
What Campers Can Expect
Unlike a traditional summer camp, the Westlake Junior Fire Academy focuses on experiential learning and public safety education.
Throughout the week, participants will explore fire and EMS careers while taking part in activities such as:
- Fire station and apparatus tours
- Fire extinguisher training
- Basic first aid and CPR instruction
- Mock search-and-rescue exercises
- Hose operations
- Emergency response scenarios
- Team-building challenges
- Leadership and responsibility development
The academy is taught by members of the Westlake Fire Department along with representatives from various community agencies, giving campers exposure to multiple aspects of emergency services and public safety.
Organizers say the goal is to create a fun environment where participants can learn practical skills while developing qualities that can benefit them long after camp ends.

Why Programs Like This Matter
Junior fire academies have become increasingly popular across the country as fire departments look for ways to connect with younger generations and strengthen community relationships.
For many participants, the experience serves as an introduction to careers in firefighting, emergency medicine, law enforcement, or other public service professions. Even for those who choose different career paths, the lessons learned—from CPR and first aid to teamwork and leadership—can prove valuable throughout their lives.
Programs like the Westlake Junior Fire Academy also help build stronger connections between first responders and the communities they serve. By opening station doors and providing hands-on experiences, firefighters can help young residents better understand emergency services while fostering trust and civic engagement.
For families in Westfield, the academy offers a rare opportunity for teens to step into the boots of local first responders for a week and gain a firsthand look at the dedication, training, and teamwork required to protect the community.
