Westheimer Lakes Blood Drive on July 21: Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center Invites Residents to Save Lives

July 10 2025

Residents of Westheimer Lakes and surrounding communities are invited to roll up their sleeves for a vital cause this summer. In partnership with the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center (GCRBC), a community blood drive will be held on Monday, July 21, 2025, from 1:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the North Clubhouse, located at 6201 Westheimer Lakes North Dr., Katy, TX 77494.

Donations will be collected aboard the GCRBC’s mobile blood donation coach, offering residents a convenient way to contribute to the region’s lifesaving blood supply. As a token of appreciation, all successful donors will receive a $25 Donor Rewards Store gift card.

Why Donating Blood Matters—Especially Now

Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. From cancer patients and trauma victims to mothers experiencing complications during childbirth, the demand never stops. Yet, only about 3% of eligible Americans donate blood each year, according to the American Red Cross.

The Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center, which serves more than 170 hospitals and health care institutions in the Texas Gulf Coast region, plays a critical role in addressing that need. Their mission—“Saving lives, today and tomorrow”—relies on local donors who commit to giving regularly.

Unlike some medical resources, blood cannot be manufactured or stockpiled for long periods. Most donated red blood cells must be used within 42 days, and platelets are viable for just 5 days. That’s why consistent, community-based donations like the upcoming drive in Westheimer Lakes are essential to maintaining a stable supply.

One Donation. Three Lives.

A single donation can save up to three lives. That’s because whole blood is often separated into three components—red blood cells, platelets, and plasma—each used to treat different patients. For example:

  • Red blood cells help trauma and surgery patients.
  • Platelets are vital for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.
  • Plasma supports patients with liver failure or severe burns.

GCRBC uses state-of-the-art technology and strict safety protocols to ensure a seamless experience for donors. The donation process, from check-in to completion, typically takes under an hour, with the actual blood draw lasting about 10 minutes.

Giving Close to Home

For Westheimer Lakes residents, the upcoming drive is more than a public service—it’s a chance to come together as neighbors and make a tangible difference. Blood drives hosted within local communities not only ease accessibility but also foster a spirit of collective compassion.

The GCRBC team encourages donors of all blood types to participate, especially those with O-negative blood, the universal type used in emergencies. First-time donors are welcome and supported throughout the process, and repeat donors are especially valued for their long-term impact.

To prepare for donation, GCRBC recommends getting a good night’s sleep, staying hydrated, and eating a healthy meal beforehand. Donors must bring a valid ID and meet general eligibility guidelines, which can be reviewed on the GCRBC website.
