Westfield High School Student-Athletes Celebrate College Commitments on National Signing Day
National Signing Day brought moments of pride across Spring Independent School District as student-athletes officially committed to continue their academic and athletic careers at the collegiate level. Families, coaches and campus staff gathered to recognize years of dedication, discipline and perseverance.
Across the district, nine student-athletes signed financial aid agreements with colleges nationwide. Among them were Nickyanna Miles, who earned a volleyball scholarship to Blinn College, and several football players committing to universities including East Central, Westgate Christian, Henderson State, Schreiner, Murray State and William Penn.
At Westfield High School, the celebration was especially meaningful as eight student-athletes were recognized in front of a packed gym filled with family, teammates and mentors.
Luis Velasquez Jr., a Spring ISD graduate who began his education at Beneke Elementary and Wells Middle School, committed to Westgate Christian University. A first-generation college student, Velasquez plans to major in finance and hopes his journey will inspire younger students in the community.

“The teachers and coaches were always there when I needed them,” Velasquez said. “They supported me through challenges and helped guide me in the right direction.”
His parents shared their pride in seeing years of hard work come together, emphasizing the role of education, discipline and faith throughout his journey.
Also celebrated was Nickyanna Miles, who earned a full scholarship to play volleyball at Blinn College. Miles reflected on the encouragement she received from teachers, coaches and mentors throughout her time at Westfield.
“What makes me most proud is overcoming challenges—mentally, physically and academically,” Miles said. “Seeing how far I’ve come reminds me that I can keep pushing forward.”
Westfield head volleyball coach Novasha Stevenson, now in her tenth year, praised Miles’ growth both on and off the court, calling her journey a reminder of what consistent support can help students achieve.

Spring High School student Jonah Espinosa also signed on National Signing Day, committing to East Central University. A first-generation college student, Espinosa credited his coaches and teachers for helping him navigate both academics and athletics.
“It’s a blessing to represent where I’m from in a good way,” Espinosa said.
Spring ISD officials noted that additional student-athlete recognitions will continue, with Dekaney High School’s signing day ceremony scheduled for a later date.
For Westfield High School, National Signing Day served as a powerful moment—celebrating not just athletic achievement, but the collective effort of families, educators and a community invested in student success.
