Washington-on-the-Brazos to Celebrate $57M Grand Reopening on November 8
Just a short drive northwest of Houston along US 290, Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site is preparing to reopen its doors in grand fashion. After two years of extensive renovations totaling more than $57 million, the beloved historic site will host a much-anticipated grand reopening celebration on Saturday, November 8, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Nestled along the scenic banks of the Brazos River, the 293-acre historic site has undergone a sweeping transformation, including state-of-the-art exhibits, structural restorations, and a newly recreated Washington Townsite Experience. The event promises to be a powerful and interactive journey through Texas history—inviting visitors of all ages to step back in time and experience the Republic of Texas like never before.
A Once-in-a-Generation Event
The day will kick off at 10 a.m. at the site’s renovated Visitor Center with a ceremonial ribbon cutting. From there, guests will be able to explore the immersive “Citizens of the Republic” program, which runs until 4:30 p.m. This signature feature of the event offers a unique “choose your own adventure” format, allowing visitors to engage with a series of live historical reenactments.
Key performances will take place throughout the day at Independence Hall and the newly constructed replicas of Sam Houston’s President’s Office and the Congress Hall at Hatfield’s Exchange. These locations have been designed to echo the atmosphere of 1836, when 59 delegates met on these very grounds to declare Texas' independence from Mexico.

Adding to the day's experience, visitors will be among the first to tour the newly renovated Star of the Republic Museum, now featuring interactive exhibits that dive deeper into the people, politics, and pivotal moments of the Republic of Texas era.
Family Fun, Food Trucks, and Living History
This grand reopening has something for everyone. Food trucks will be on-site to keep guests fueled for a full day of exploration and celebration. The entire event has been designed to blend historical education with engaging family fun, offering a powerful and meaningful way to connect with the state’s past.
The Star of the Republic Museum and Visitor Center now offer high-tech displays that bring 19th-century Texas to life. Interactive exhibits introduce the individuals—heroes and everyday citizens alike—who helped shape the Republic. Guests are encouraged to begin their journey at the Visitor Center, where they can pick up site maps, tickets, and browse the Museum Store for Texas-themed gifts and snacks.
Restoring the Heart of Texas History
The extensive restoration, which began in fall 2023, was aimed at improving safety, accessibility, and storytelling at this essential historic site. Previously closed portions of the park—west of Ferry Street—will now be fully reopened to the public after being temporarily inaccessible since May 2025.

The $57.4 million revitalization effort was led by the Texas Historical Commission to ensure that the site not only honors its legacy but remains relevant and engaging for future generations. Key improvements include the full renovation of the Star of the Republic Museum, structural and interpretive updates to Independence Hall, and the development of the new Washington Townsite Experience.
Preserving the Spirit of the Republic
Known as the location “Where Texas Became Texas,” Washington-on-the-Brazos is where the Texas Declaration of Independence was signed on March 2, 1836. In the midst of war and uncertainty, delegates drafted a constitution and launched a fledgling government, paving the way for Texas to exist as its own nation from 1836 to 1846.
The historic site is part of the Republic of Texas Complex, which also includes the nearby Fanthorp Inn in Anderson, TX—a preserved 19th-century stagecoach stop—and the Barrington Living History Farm, which remained open during construction and offers visitors an authentic glimpse into 1800s farm life.
Today, Washington-on-the-Brazos continues to educate the public on early Texan society, agriculture, and government, ensuring that Texas’ proud history is never forgotten.
