Waller County Sheriff's Office Offering Women's Self-Defense Training Near Bluestem This June

June 05 2026

For many residents, personal safety is something that often remains in the background of everyday life—until a situation reminds them how important preparation can be. This month, women in Bluestem and throughout Waller County have an opportunity to gain valuable self-defense knowledge and confidence through a nationally recognized training program offered by the Waller County Sheriff's Office.

Registration is now open for the R.A.D. (Rape Aggression Defense) Program, a comprehensive women's self-defense course designed to teach awareness, prevention, risk reduction, and physical defense techniques. The program will be held at the Waller County Fairgrounds on June 15, 16, and 17, with sessions running from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. each evening.

Building Confidence Through Preparation

The R.A.D. System is one of the nation's most widely recognized self-defense training programs for women. Rather than focusing solely on physical techniques, the course emphasizes personal safety awareness, recognizing potentially dangerous situations, and learning practical strategies that can help reduce risk.

For women in growing communities like Bluestem, programs such as these provide an opportunity to develop skills that can be applied in everyday situations—whether walking through a parking lot, traveling alone, exercising outdoors, or navigating unfamiliar environments.

The course is designed to be accessible to participants of all abilities and experience levels. Organizers emphasize that no special fitness level is required, and attendees can choose how actively they participate throughout the training.

Participants may:

  • Physically participate in training exercises
  • Observe portions of the class if they prefer
  • Practice only the techniques they feel comfortable performing
  • Learn at their own pace in a supportive environment

Why Personal Safety Education Matters

According to the National Crime Victimization Survey and research from the U.S. Department of Justice, personal safety education, situational awareness training, and risk-reduction strategies can play an important role in helping individuals recognize threats and make informed decisions during potentially dangerous situations.

Programs like R.A.D. focus on empowerment through education, giving participants practical tools while helping build confidence and preparedness.

For many attendees, the greatest benefit extends beyond self-defense techniques. Participants often report increased confidence, greater awareness of their surroundings, and a stronger sense of personal preparedness.
