Volunteer with YMCA Miracle League at Langham Creek: Help Children with Disabilities Experience the Joy of Baseball
This spring, the YMCA Miracle League at the J.E. & L.E. Mabee Adaptive Sports Complex in Houston is calling on the community to step up to the plate—not as players, but as volunteers. Located at the Langham Creek Family YMCA, the complex is home to the region’s largest adaptive sports facility and offers inclusive baseball and sports programming for children and adults with disabilities.
The YMCA Miracle League, part of a global initiative founded in 1998, was designed to give every child—regardless of physical or developmental challenges—the chance to enjoy the game of baseball. The league brings together players, families, and volunteer “buddies” who assist athletes on the field, ensuring safety, encouragement, and a whole lot of fun.
This year’s Miracle League Recreational Minor League kicks off on April 5, 2025, with the Competitive Leaguebeginning April 7, 2025. Volunteer opportunities are available throughout the season, and no prior experience is required—just a willingness to support and celebrate children of all abilities.

What Volunteers Do
Volunteers can serve in various roles, including:
-
Buddy Crew – Provide one-on-one assistance to athletes during the game
-
Field Crew – Help set up fields and assist players in the dugouts
-
Greeter Crew – Welcome families and volunteers, handle check-ins and distribute gear
-
Sound Crew – Announce games, run music, and manage the scoreboard
-
Hype Crew – Energize the crowd and cheer on the players
Being a Miracle League buddy is about more than just helping on the field—it’s about building confidence, forming friendships, and creating unforgettable moments.
“Give every child a chance to play,” reads the YMCA’s call to action. “You don’t need experience—just a big heart.”
A Facility Built for Inclusion
Originally constructed in 2016, the J.E. & L.E. Mabee Adaptive Sports Complex was specifically designed to accommodate players with physical disabilities. It features two synthetic turf fields, wheelchair-accessible dugouts, a barrier-free playground, and a multi-use pavilion. The facility was expanded in 2017 to support the growing need for inclusive sports in the Greater Houston area.

A Longstanding Mission with Expanding Reach
The Miracle League began with 35 players in Georgia and has grown to serve over 450,000 children and adults with disabilities through more than 350 Miracle League organizations across the U.S., Puerto Rico, Canada, and Mexico. In partnership with the YMCA of Greater Houston, the Langham Creek location continues this mission by offering baseball, basketball, swimming, soccer, and adaptive sports clinics throughout the year.
The games are tailored to meet players where they are. Every athlete wears an official uniform and plays in a supportive, fun environment that matches their skill level. Programs are divided into Recreational Minors (ages 4–9), Recreational Majors (ages 10+), and Competitive (ages 12+), allowing participants to grow with the program.
The Impact of Volunteering
According to a report by the National Institute on Aging, volunteering has numerous benefits, including reduced stress, increased mental well-being, and greater social connection. When combined with meaningful community service—like supporting children with disabilities—volunteers can experience a profound sense of purpose.
The Miracle League at Langham Creek is supported by a network of nonprofits, donors, and volunteer organizations, including local chapters of the National Charity League (NCL) and Young Men's Service League (YMSL). Thanks to this support, the program was offered free of charge for over a decade. In January 2025, a modest $25 program fee was introduced to help sustain and enhance the quality of offerings.
