Visionaries of Hope: How the Fort Bend County West Lions Club is Changing Lives, One Pair of Glasses at a Time
In the relentless pursuit of helping others, the Fort Bend County West Lions Club has taken up the mantle as “Knights of the Blind,” just as Helen Keller challenged Lions Clubs International in 1925 during a Lions Clubs International event. Fueled with the unwavering mission to crusade against blindness, the local Lions Club, in collaboration with Cane Island Katy Inc., is tirelessly working to provide glasses to low-income individuals and their families at little to no cost. This initiative is undertaken through the Lions Eye Assist program.
The Lions Eye Assist program operates through the VSP Eyes of Hope certificate program. Eligible recipients are those with a family income at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level guidelines, who have not utilized a VSP program in the last 12 months, and who lack coverage through a private insurer or a government program for eye care services or prescription eyewear covered by this certificate.
Every week, approved applications are processed, and for the convenience and comfort of the beneficiaries, certificates are sent directly to either the school nurse or the referring agency partner through USPS, with instructions for redemption.
The Fort Bend County West Lions Club, headquartered in Katy and supported by Cane Island Katy Inc., stands as a symbol of hope for the Greater Katy, Fort Bend County, and West Houston community. Whether providing humanitarian support or community-based assistance, the Fort Bend County West Lions Club serves in a wide range of capacities. As Rev. David Greene, the club's president, so aptly puts it, "This club means a lot to our Lions, but it means so much more to the people we serve."
