VFW Post 9182 Partners with Sam Houston State University to Launch First Endowed Scholarship for Katy ISD Veterans' Families

April 21 2025

In a landmark achievement for the veteran community in West Houston, Floyd E. Breedlove VFW Post 9182 in Katy, Texas, has announced the creation of its first official endowment. In collaboration with Sam Houston State University (SHSU), the post has established a $26,000 scholarship fund that will provide a $1,000 annual award to a Katy ISD high school student with a direct connection to a U.S. military veteran.

This new endowment marks a significant milestone in the post’s 77-year history of veteran advocacy, community service, and youth engagement. It aligns with SHSU’s mission to expand access to higher education through permanently funded scholarships designed to support students across Texas.

A Legacy of Service, Now With a Lasting Educational Impact

Founded on June 19, 1947, VFW Post 9182 has long served as a cornerstone of the Katy community, honoring local heroes like its namesake, World War II veteran Floyd E. Breedlove. The post is known for its dynamic community service, youth scholarship initiatives, and ongoing support for veterans and their families. The partnership with SHSU elevates this legacy, providing an enduring educational benefit for generations to come.

Commander Peyton Lumpkin, who leads the post and served in the U.S. Air Force, emphasized the significance of this accomplishment: “This endowment is more than a financial gift—it’s a tribute to our service members and their families. It ensures that the values we fought for are passed down through educational opportunities for the next generation.”

The endowment will benefit Katy ISD students who are either veterans themselves or have a parent or grandparent who served in the military. Through this targeted approach, the scholarship not only supports academic excellence but also deepens community ties to the veteran legacy in Katy.

Endowment Ensures Sustainability and Equity

The $26,000 fund meets SHSU’s minimum for endowed scholarships, which begin awarding once the threshold is met. The principal remains intact, and the income generated will fund the $1,000 annual award in perpetuity. This sustainable model reflects SHSU’s broader vision of eliminating financial barriers for deserving students—a mission that resonates strongly with VFW Post 9182.

Commander Lumpkin expressed his appreciation for the university’s collaborative spirit, stating: “We’re incredibly grateful for the professionalism and support of Sam Houston State University. Their unwavering commitment to honoring veterans and uplifting their families made this endowment possible.”

Continuing a Tradition of Youth Engagement and Patriotism

VFW Post 9182 has long supported educational opportunities for students in the Katy area. Its involvement in national scholarship competitions such as the Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen contests has allowed young people to explore civic themes while competing for substantial scholarship awards. The new SHSU-endowed scholarship further extends the post’s commitment to fostering patriotism through education.

This initiative complements a robust portfolio of community programs—including a partnership with American Legion Post 164 to provide military funeral honors, local school presentations on flag etiquette, and events like the 4th of July Auction and Memorial Day Buddy Poppy distributions.

A Model for Veteran-Led Community Investment

As Katy and West Houston continue to grow, the endowment underscores the vital role of veterans’ organizations in shaping the community’s educational and cultural future. By aligning with SHSU’s well-established endowment structure, VFW Post 9182 sets a compelling precedent for other VFW chapters and civic groups seeking to invest in long-term educational impact.

For families in Katy ISD with military ties, this scholarship represents not only financial assistance but also recognition of their service and sacrifice. It stands as a beacon of hope, continuity, and respect—values that VFW Post 9182 has upheld for decades.
