Veteran Career & Resource Summit Set for Oct. 16 at LSC-Kingwood
On Wednesday, October 16, 2025, veterans and transitioning service members across Greater Houston will have an opportunity to connect directly with employers and support services during the Veteran Services Career & Resource Summit, held at Lone Star College–Kingwood from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Hosted in partnership with NextOp, a Houston-based nonprofit that helps veterans enter the civilian workforce, the free event is part of a growing effort to close the employment and career transition gaps facing veterans nationwide.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, veterans—especially those recently separated from service—often face challenges finding civilian employment that matches their experience. In 2024, the jobless rate for veterans aged 18 to 24 was 7.7%, significantly higher than the 3.2% rate for all veterans and well above the national average.
“Lone Star College System is here to ensure our hard-working veteran students have the support they need to get to the next level, whether that’s workforce training, transferring credits to a four-year university, earning a degree or starting a new career,” said Vickie Johnson, LSCS Executive Director of Veteran Services.

The summit will feature:
- One-on-one employer networking with companies actively hiring veterans
- On-site resume review stations
- A live panel discussion with career experts
- Veteran service providers offering benefit navigation and career resources
Confirmed participants include the Houston Fire Department, Houston Police Department, Shell Mobility & Convenience, and Butler Weldments, among others. Each has expressed a strong interest in recruiting veterans for roles that value leadership, discipline, and mission focus.
In addition to job leads, the summit provides something equally critical—connection to services. A 2021 study from the Institute for Veterans and Military Families at Syracuse University found that nearly half of veterans reported difficulty accessing information about available resources during their post-military transition. Events like this aim to close that gap by bringing resources and opportunities into one central place.
Veterans currently make up about 5% of the Lone Star College student population. The college’s Veteran Services team offers specialized support such as academic advising, career counseling, mental health resources, and guidance on VA benefits. That work was recently recognized with the 2025 Veteran Education Excellence Recognition Gold Award.
