'Utopia Still Sounds Like a Good Idea': Social Justice & Climate Issues Explored in Interactive Cypress Art Exhibit

January 19 2026

Residents of Cypress and surrounding communities are invited to dive into an immersive conversation about the most pressing issues of our time—through the lens of contemporary art. Lone Star College-CyFair’s Bosque Gallery will host the spring season opening exhibition “Utopia Still Sounds Like a Good Idea”by Texas-based artist and educator Joshua Duttweiler, on display from January 29 through February 26, 2026.

The free, public exhibition centers around interactive installations that address climate change, social justice, and the human impact of industrialization along the Texas coast, making it a timely and relevant experience for Greater Houston area residents seeking deeper community engagement.

Duttweiler, who teaches at Texas State University, brings a multidisciplinary approach to his work, fusing design, installation art, digital media, and print to challenge viewers. His artist statement reveals a focus on using design as a critical framework to explore and expose social inequities. “From print to digital to site-specific installation, the form and content relationships are uniquely designed to speak to its intended audience,” he shares.

According to Bosque Gallery coordinator Heather Braman, this exhibit continues Duttweiler’s exploration of environmental and social challenges, specifically examining sea level rise and the consequences of industrial transport on Texas coastal communities. “This show will be a further exploration of his social justice and climate issues via artwork installation,” said Braman, adding that participation and audience interaction are integral components of the exhibition.

The community is encouraged to engage with the artist and his work during two special events:

  • Opening Reception: Monday, February 12 at 5:30 p.m. at LSC-CyFair’s Center for the Arts.
  • Library Art Talk: Also on February 12 at 1:30 p.m., featuring a deep dive into Duttweiler’s process and inspiration, followed by guided exhibition viewing.

The Bosque Gallery is located at 9191 Barker Cypress Road, Cypress, TX, and serves as a creative hub for Lone Star College-CyFair’s art program, which offers art classes, exhibitions, and scholarships year-round. With spring classes still open for registration, the gallery event also provides a great opportunity for prospective students to connect with the campus art community.
