Know Before You Go: Fishing Regulations in Texas
Whether you're headed to Trout-A-Palooza or planning a quiet weekend at your local park, here are a few key fishing rules from the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD):
- License Required: Anyone 17 and older must have a valid Texas fishing license with the appropriate freshwater endorsement for public inland waters.
- Bag & Size Limits: Follow statewide bag limits and minimum/maximum lengths for game fish like bass, catfish, crappie, and trout.
- Bait Rules: Using game fish or their parts as bait is illegal. Only native Gulf shrimp may be used in Texas waters.
- No Waste: Edible fish taken from public waters cannot be left to die without the intent to use them.
- Catch & Release: A fish placed on a stringer, in a livewell, or cooler is considered “in possession” and subject to regulations.
- Visit tpwd.texas.gov for full rules and updates.
