Travis County Invites Community to 37th Annual Juneteenth Celebration in Austin Honoring Unity, Freedom and History

June 04 2026

As communities across Central Texas prepare to commemorate Juneteenth, Travis County is inviting residents, families and visitors to gather for a celebration that honors both a pivotal moment in American history and the ongoing pursuit of unity and equality.

The Travis County 37th Annual Juneteenth Celebration will take place Thursday, June 18, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. beneath the parking garage at 800 Lavaca St. in downtown Austin. Open to both Travis County employees and the general public, the event will feature food vendors, informational booths, music and opportunities for community fellowship under this year's theme, “Unity and Freedom.”

For many local families, Juneteenth serves as more than a holiday. It is a time to reflect on history, celebrate cultural heritage and strengthen community connections. Events like Travis County’s annual gathering provide an opportunity for residents to come together while recognizing the significance of freedom and the contributions of African Americans to Texas and the nation.

A Tradition Rooted in History

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Major General Gordon Granger and Union troops arrived in Galveston and announced that enslaved people in Texas were free—more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.

The day has since become one of the most important commemorations in African American history, marking the realization of freedom for countless individuals who had remained enslaved despite the proclamation's issuance in 1863.

Texas became the first state to officially recognize Juneteenth as a state holiday in 1980. The observance gained national recognition on June 17, 2021, when Juneteenth was signed into law as a federal holiday.

Today, Juneteenth celebrations across Texas continue to serve as reminders of both the progress that has been made and the work that remains in advancing equality and opportunity for all.
