Tomball Police Department Offers Women’s Self-Defense Training Ahead of Holiday Season

October 22 2025

As the holiday season approaches—a time when parking lots are crowded, routines change, and personal safety can become more vulnerable—the Tomball Police Department is once again stepping up to help local women feel more confident and protected.

From November 5 through November 7, the department will host a three-day Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) course specifically for women, focused on teaching realistic self-defense tactics and strategies. The training will take place from 5:00 to 9:00 PM each evening at the Public Works Building, located at 506 James Street in Tomball.

This widely recognized program offers a hands-on approach to personal safety, starting with awareness, prevention, and risk reduction before moving into practical self-defense training. Unlike martial arts, R.A.D. is designed to be accessible and effective for individuals of all ages and physical abilities, with techniques grounded in real-life scenarios.

Why Women's Self-Defense Matters

The importance of self-defense training for women is well-supported by national statistics. According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, approximately 1 in 5 women in the United States has experienced completed or attempted rape in her lifetime. Additionally, about 1 in 3 women has faced some form of physical violence from an intimate partner. While risks can vary by setting and time of year, being aware of one’s surroundings and learning to respond effectively remains crucial—especially as routines change and public spaces become busier during the holiday season.

The R.A.D. System aims to break this cycle by empowering women with tools to recognize and avoid danger, as well as respond effectively in the face of a threat.

Community-Focused Safety

The Tomball Police Department offers the course to help equip participants with both physical techniques and the mental preparedness to assess and avoid potentially dangerous situations. The program is designed to give women the tools they need to walk into the holidays—and every season—with greater confidence.

Held multiple times throughout the year, the Tomball R.A.D. classes typically fill up quickly, and residents are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible to reserve a spot.

Registration Information

Women interested in attending the November 5–7 course can register online via the Tomball Police Department’s form center at tomballtx.gov/FormCenter/Police-5/RAD-Class-2025-127

This program is open to all women in the Tomball area and surrounding communities. Whether you're heading to the mall, running errands after dark, or simply want to build confidence, the R.A.D. System provides practical training that could make all the difference.
