Tomball ISD Student Ivan Chen Wins Harris County Precinct 4 Bus Design Contest
Tomball ISD student Ivan Chen was recently recognized as a Harris County Precinct 4 Bus Design Contest Winner, announced by Commissioner Lesley Briones.
Chen is a current freshman at Tomball Memorial High School but entered the contest last school year as an eighth grader at Willow Wood Junior High. Chen was guided in the design process by WWJHS art teacher Daria Souvorova.
“I am so proud of Ivan Chen for this amazing and unique accomplishment,” Souvorova said. “It's not every day that you get to say my artwork is covering a bus. His hard work and talent will represent Tomball ISD for as long as the bus is in operation, amazing!”

From Palette to Pavement: Student Art on Precinct 4 Buses contest was introduced to all Precinct 4 school districts, and asked student artists to submit artwork following the theme: “The History of and Unity in Harris County.” Students were encouraged to think about the diversity of cultures that make up our unique region, historical milestones/landmarks, bayous and parks, or leaders and changemakers that helped shape our community.
Chen wanted to incorporate natural symbols that are iconic in Texas and Harris County. A central portion of his design featured the outline of the State of Texas with a drawing of a longhorn and the state bird within the outline as Texas is surrounded by blue bonnets and monarch butterflies.
Chen’s winning artwork is now featured among the new bus fleet that services the senior community, offering free day trips including recreational and educational activities. During natural disasters, these buses will also provide transportation for emergency supplies and residents in need.
