The Arc of Katy's First Annual Turkey Trot Fosters Fun and Fitness

November 21 2023

On Thursday, November 16, members of The Arc of Katy laced up their sneakers for the inaugural Turkey Trot, blending fun and fitness while embracing the cherished Thanksgiving tradition. Recognizing the significance of Turkey Trots as a festive and healthy activity for families, the organizers aimed to create an opportunity for their group to partake in this joyful tradition in their own unique way.

During a planning for The Arc of Katy's November calendar of events, staff members responsible for curating engaging activities for participants were brainstorming ideas around Thanksgiving traditions. Barbara, a staff member with The Arc of Katy, is a runner and while pitching ideas, she suggested hosting a Turkey Trot. The concept quickly gained traction as an exciting and inclusive event.

"We wanted to have an event that would encourage both fun and fitness. A Turkey Trot is a Thanksgiving tradition for many families on Thanksgiving day. We wanted to host an event that would allow our group to enjoy that tradition," said Ferner.

The Turkey Trot saw active participation, with 35 participants and eight staff members joining the event. In addition to the regular staff, three other members volunteered to help organize and facilitate the event. The race itself encompassed a walk/run combination, with participants grouped based on their ability to complete laps, ranging from one to five.

The mission behind hosting the Turkey Trot aligned with The Arc of Katy's Be Strong program, which encourages participants to stay active through various means such as walking, swimming, water aerobics, biking, gym equipment, and yoga. Through the Turkey Trot, The Arc of Katy hoped the event would foster movement in a fun and festive manner, promoting both physical and mental well-being for members.

Despite the short planning time of just one month, the event was a resounding success. Members thoroughly enjoyed the Turkey Trot and are already looking forward to next year's edition. The enthusiasm and engagement exhibited during the event showcase the positive impact of combining physical activity with community spirit.

Good Times Running Co. played a vital role in the event by generously volunteering their time and resources. They donated medals, bibs, water, and cups, and set up the starting/finish line arch, adding an extra layer of excitement to the occasion. The Mark A. Chapman YMCA and the Monty Ballard YMCA also contributed to the event by donating T-shirts.

As The Arc of Katy's members revel in the success of the Turkey Trot, they are gearing up for their next exciting event – the Holiday Fa La La La Fashion Show and Sing-a-long scheduled for Saturday, December 9, 2023, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm at CrossRoad Church Gym, located at 700 Westgreen Blvd., Katy, Texas 77450. The group's commitment to an active and joyful lifestyle continues with each unique and inclusive event they organize.
