Texas Master Chorale Brings a Season of Gospel, Holiday and Classical Masterworks to The Centrum
For Northwest Houston residents who enjoy live music close to home, the Texas Master Chorale’s upcoming season brings both a fresh setting and a wide-ranging program to the Cypress Creek area.
The 100-voice ensemble has announced that all three concerts in its 2026-2027 “Spirit and Song” season will be performed at The Centrum at Cypress Creek Christian Community Center, located at 6823 Cypresswood Drive in Spring. The move gives the chorale a new home inside an auditorium that can accommodate up to 875 guests and is already familiar to many local arts patrons.
The season will move from the rhythmic energy of gospel music to the familiarity of Christmas carols and, finally, to two large-scale works that explore conflict, faith and peace.
A New Concert Home in the Cypress Creek Community
The venue change places Texas Master Chorale within one of Northwest Houston’s established performing arts spaces. The Centrum regularly hosts concerts and community arts programs through Cypress Creek Foundation for the Arts and Community Enrichment, commonly known as Cypress Creek FACE, which has spent decades expanding access to live music and arts education in the area.
For concertgoers in Spring, Klein, Champions, Cypress and surrounding communities, the location offers an opportunity to hear major choral works without traveling into central Houston.
The auditorium’s size also suits the scale of Texas Master Chorale. Founded in 1986, the nonprofit ensemble is made up of approximately 100 auditioned singers and performs classical, contemporary, sacred and secular choral music under founder and artistic director Bradley Bouley. The organization has also supported future music educators through a scholarship program established during its 2018-2019 season.
“Ye Shall Have a Song” Opens the Season in October
The season begins Saturday, Oct. 24, with “Ye Shall Have a Song,” a program featuring Robert Ray’s “Gospel Mass” and selections from Randall Thompson’s “The Peaceable Kingdom.”
Ray’s “Gospel Mass” brings the traditional text of the Mass into the musical language of African American gospel. Written for choir, soloists and instrumental accompaniment, the piece blends sacred liturgy with gospel rhythms, harmonies and an expressive sense of communal worship.
Ray was a composer, conductor, pianist and music educator whose best-known work grew from his experiences in both church and concert settings. For audiences unfamiliar with formal Mass settings, “Gospel Mass” offers an accessible entry point, connecting an old text with a style rooted in energy, testimony and shared musical expression.
The concert will also include part of Randall Thompson’s “The Peaceable Kingdom,” an unaccompanied choral work based on passages from the Book of Isaiah. The complete composition moves between warnings, turmoil and hope before reaching “Ye Shall Have a Song,” the movement that gives the October concert its name.
Thompson, one of the most influential American choral composers of the 20th century, wrote music known for clear vocal lines and a strong understanding of how voices work together. Placing his reflective, text-centered writing alongside Ray’s gospel style gives the season opener two very different expressions of faith and resilience.
Holiday Concert Will Include Tomball High School Chorale
Texas Master Chorale’s annual Christmas concert returns Saturday, Dec. 19, with “A Season of Wonder.”
The program will feature traditional Christmas carols and seasonal songs intended for families and community members looking for a local holiday concert in the Spring and Cypress Creek area. Students from the Tomball High School Chorale will join the ensemble, bringing a multigenerational element to one of the organization’s most popular annual traditions.
Their participation also gives young singers the experience of performing alongside an established auditioned ensemble in a large concert setting. For families connected to Tomball ISD, the appearance creates a direct hometown connection within the broader Northwest Houston arts community.
Rather than centering the evening on a single major work, “A Season of Wonder” will draw its character from familiar music and the collective sound of student and adult voices. It is designed as a holiday gathering as much as a formal concert—a chance for friends and relatives to slow down together during a busy time of year.
Bernstein and Haydn Bring the Season to a Powerful Close
The final concert, “Triumph and Peace,” is scheduled for Saturday, April 3, 2027. Its program pairs Leonard Bernstein’s “Chichester Psalms” with Joseph Haydn’s “Lord Nelson Mass,” formally titled “Missa in Angustiis,” or “Mass in Troubled Times.”
Bernstein composed “Chichester Psalms” after receiving a commission connected to the 1965 music festival at Chichester Cathedral in England. Sung in Hebrew and drawing from six biblical psalms, the work combines the sound of the concert hall, the traditions of sacred choral music and Bernstein’s distinctive use of rhythm and melody.
The piece includes moments of urgency and conflict, but its larger direction is hopeful. A lyrical setting of Psalm 23—“The Lord is my shepherd”—stands at its center, while the concluding music turns toward unity and peace. Bernstein, also known for “West Side Story” and his leadership of the New York Philharmonic, brought elements of Broadway, jazz, Jewish musical tradition and classical composition into a voice that was unmistakably his own.
Haydn’s “Lord Nelson Mass,” written in 1798, begins from a more troubled place. Its original title reflects the anxiety of a period marked by war in Europe, and the music moves between dark tension and confident celebration. The familiar “Lord Nelson” nickname was attached to the work later and was not Haydn’s own title for the composition.
Franz Joseph Haydn was one of the defining composers of the Classical period, and this Mass is widely regarded as one of his most dramatic sacred works. Heard alongside “Chichester Psalms,” it creates a closing program built around a theme that remains recognizable across centuries: the search for steadiness and peace during uncertain times.
Tickets, Student Admission and Complimentary Valet Parking
Tickets for the Texas Master Chorale 2026-2027 season are on sale now for $30. They may be purchased online at TexasMasterChorale.org, by calling the box office at 281-440-4850 or at the door.
Students will be admitted free with a valid school identification card, making the concerts more accessible to young musicians and families. Complimentary valet parking will also be available at each performance.

Auditions Open to New Texas Master Chorale Members
Experienced singers interested in joining Texas Master Chorale may audition Sunday, Aug. 9, or Monday, Aug. 10, at Northwoods Presbyterian Church, 3320 Cypress Creek Parkway in Houston.
Audition appointments and music may be found through the Texas Master Chorale website. For local singers, joining the chorale offers more than a place onstage; it provides an opportunity to become part of a longstanding ensemble built from musicians across the Houston area.
