Taquería de Diez Brings Its Acclaimed Tijuana-Style Menu to Old Sixth Street

February 06 2026

Taquería de Diez, the speakeasy-style taqueria that has earned a loyal following since opening downtown in early 2024, is officially heading to Old Sixth Street. The restaurant will relocate to 500 E. Sixth Street as part of the highly anticipated “Old 6th” redevelopment project and is expected to open in the first half of 2027. As part of the move, the taqueria will close its current location at 206 Trinity Street.

Since its debut, Taquería de Diez has been widely praised for bringing authentic Tijuana-inspired tacos to Austin, earning recognition as one of Austin Monthly’s Best New Restaurants of 2024. The move places the concept in one of the city’s most historic corridors, aligning a modern culinary success story with a district deeply rooted in Austin’s cultural identity.

Inside the Menu That Made Taquería de Diez a Standout

At the heart of Taquería de Diez’s success is a focused, authenticity-driven menu representing the flavors of northwest Mexico. Guests can choose from classic tacos served on five-inch corn or flour tortillas, featuring fillings like carne asada (sirloin steak), adobada (pastor-style pork), pollo asado, grilled nopal cactus, and campechano—a combination of steak and pastor. Quesadillas and the popular “Volcán,” a crunchy corn tortilla topped with melted cheese and meat, expand on those same core flavors.

The menu also includes hearty burritos or burrito plates wrapped in 12-inch flour tortillas with rice and beans, along with vegetarian options like arroz y frijol. Sides such as chips with guacamole or salsa, arroz rojo, and ranchero beans round out the offerings, while traditional desserts like flan de cajeta and arroz con leche provide a classic finish. Beverage options lean nostalgic and refreshing, featuring Mexican Coke, Jarritos, agua fresca, and Topo Chico.

Everything is prepared with an emphasis on freshness—handmade tortillas, salsas made on the spot, and meats cooked on the grill “con fuego,” never frozen.

Old Sixth Street: A Fitting Home for Tradition and Energy

The relocation places Taquería de Diez within the broader revitalization of Old 6th (Old Sixth Street), a project managed by Stream Realty that aims to preserve 31 historic parcels while reinvigorating one of Austin’s most iconic areas. Long known as a gathering place for music, food, and creative expression, Sixth Street has been central to Austin’s identity for more than a century.

Developers describe the vision as moving the district forward by bringing it back—honoring its past while welcoming new restaurants, shops, and experiences that reflect the city’s evolving community. For many, Taquería de Diez fits naturally into that story, combining heritage-driven food with a fast-casual, open-kitchen concept that invites interaction between guests and taqueros.

As anticipation builds toward its 2027 opening, Taquería de Diez’s move to Old 6th signals both continuity and change: a beloved Austin restaurant expanding its reach while helping write the next chapter of one of the city’s most storied streets.
