Sugar Land Space Cowboys’ Mascot Orion Promotes Fort Bend Libraries’ Summer Reading Challenge
Summer reading is getting an out-of-this-world boost in Fort Bend County, thanks to a special appearance by Orion, the beloved mascot of the Sugar Land Space Cowboys. On Thursday, July 17, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m., families are invited to meet Orion at the Missouri City Branch Library, located at 1530 Texas Pkwy, Missouri City, TX 77489, for a lively, educational event celebrating the Fort Bend County Libraries’ (FBCL) 2025 Summer Reading Challenge.
This year’s theme, “Color Our World,” encourages children, teens, and adults to read for fun and growth all summer long. Why Summer Reading Is Critical for Kids
Reading during the summer isn’t just fun—it’s essential for student success. According to the National Summer Learning Association (NSLA), children who don’t read over the summer can lose up to two months of reading development, a setback known as the “summer slide.”
Meanwhile, children who read consistently during summer break often gain skills, particularly in comprehension and vocabulary. The Brookings Institution notes that public libraries offering accessible summer reading programs play a vital role in closing academic gaps—especially in underserved communities.
FBCL’s Summer Reading Challenge is one of the most popular free summer learning programs in Fort Bend, helping families combat learning loss while having fun.
Mascot Fun Meets Literacy Goals
Orion, the Sugar Land Space Cowboys’ larger-than-life mascot in a space suit and cowboy hat, is a fan favorite at Constellation Field. Now, he’s bringing his high-energy antics and love for reading to the library.
Children and families can take photos with Orion, hear stories, and learn more about the Sugar Land Space Cowboys, Fort Bend’s own Triple-A Minor League Baseball team affiliated with the Houston Astros.
Library staff will be on-site to help families sign up for the Summer Reading Challenge, introduce them to age-appropriate reading materials, and provide schedules for upcoming programs.
What You Can Earn by Reading
Participants of all ages can earn rewards based on how many books they read or how much time they spend reading. The challenge is open through the end of summer, and special prizes, certificates, and even drawings are available for active participants.
Whether you love picture books, graphic novels, chapter books, or audiobooks, every minute spent reading counts.
