Spring ISD Theatre Programs Take Center Stage with Statewide Distinction from Texas Thespians
Spring Independent School District has taken a major bow on the statewide stage, earning its first-ever Texas Thespians Premier Communities for Theatre Education Award. This prestigious recognition from the Texas Thespians Educational Theatre Association puts Spring ISD among just 21 school districts across Texas to be honored this year for excellence in theatre education.
“This is a historic milestone for Spring ISD and a powerful signal that we are entering a new era of excellence,” said Spring ISD Superintendent Dr. Kregg Cuellar. “I am most proud of our students and our Performing and Visual Arts team, and of the urgency we are bringing to both academic achievement and arts education. This recognition confirms that we are moving this district forward with purpose and accountability.”
The award celebrates school districts that exceed basic expectations for theatre education, providing students with access to high-quality programs that align with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for Fine Arts, support student participation in the International Thespian Society (ITS), and uphold the Educational Theatre Association’s Opportunity to Learn Standards.
Building a Stronger Theatre Foundation
Spring ISD’s Performing and Visual Arts (PVA) Department has long been recognized for standout programs in music and visual arts. But this year, the district expanded its focus—putting renewed energy into strengthening Theatre and Dance programs, especially at the middle school level. A key milestone was the reinstatement of the theatre program at Wells Middle School, contributing to a stronger pipeline of student talent and opportunity.
“I am incredibly proud of our entire Performing and Visual Arts team for their dedication and commitment to our students,” said David Tijerina-Landgrebe, Director of Performing and Visual Arts. “While Spring ISD has long excelled in music and visual arts, this year we placed a renewed focus on strengthening Theatre and Dance across the district. Our goal is for all PVA programs to earn A or B ratings, and this recognition shows the progress we are making.”

The award application process was led by Arts Integration Coordinator Johnny Williams, who worked closely with campuses to document the district’s efforts and growth. His leadership, combined with support from educators at every level, helped showcase Spring ISD’s commitment to expanding theatre access across all grade levels.
Empowering Students Beyond the Stage
The most meaningful outcomes of the award, however, are seen in student experiences. Theatre education in Spring ISD isn’t just about lights and lines—it’s about building confidence, discipline, and future pathways.
Abeer Siddiqui, a student at Carl Wunsche Sr. High School who participates in theatre at Spring High School, described how the program shaped her academic and personal growth:
“Being part of the theatre program at Spring High School taught me strong time management, discipline, and creative problem solving,” Siddiqui said. “Theatre helped me earn my teachers’ trust as they see how I balance a demanding schedule. Most importantly, it has opened doors for my college life by creating scholarship opportunities that allow me to pursue a medical pathway in college while continuing my love for the arts. Theatre hasn’t taken away from my academics—it has strengthened them and expanded my future career goals.”
These kinds of outcomes are exactly what Texas Thespians seeks to encourage. As the largest state chapter of the Educational Theatre Association, Texas Thespians serves more than 600 troupes and 16,000 middle and high school students across the state. The organization supports theatre educators and students through workshops, festivals, competitions, and professional development, while promoting national standards of excellence in arts education.
By honoring districts like Spring ISD through its Premier Communities for Theatre Education Award, Texas Thespians highlights communities that are making the arts accessible, equitable, and empowering for all students.

Setting the Stage for Continued Success
As Spring ISD continues to invest in its arts programs, this recognition marks an important step forward—and a clear signal that the district is committed to preparing well-rounded students with opportunities that stretch far beyond the classroom.
“This achievement represents a true team effort and a strong commitment to strengthening theatre education across all grade levels,” added Tijerina-Landgrebe.
In a district where the stage lights are shining brighter than ever, Spring ISD’s award-winning theatre programs are helping students dream big—and take their place in the spotlight.
