Spring ISD Summer Reading Program Encourages Students in Eagle Landing to 'Unearth the Stories Within You' This Summer

For many families in Eagle Landing and across Spring ISD, summer break brings a familiar challenge: how to keep students engaged, learning and inspired while school is out. This year, Spring ISD is hoping to turn that challenge into an adventure through its 2026 Journey Into Reading summer program, inviting K-8 students to discover new ideas, cultures and experiences one page at a time.

Built around the theme “Unearth the Stories Within You,” the district’s Summer Reading Program aims to make reading feel less like homework and more like exploration. Whether students are flipping through graphic novels, listening to audiobooks on a family road trip or discovering a new favorite series at the library, district leaders say the goal is simple — help children in Eagle Landing and throughout Spring ISD stay connected to learning while enjoying their summer.

The program officially begins Monday, June 1, 2026, with a Summer Kick-Off Foam Party at Barbara Bush Library, located at 6817 Cypresswood Drive in Spring. Families from Eagle Landing and surrounding Spring-area neighborhoods can expect an energetic afternoon filled with bubbles, games, laughter and a celebration centered around books and community.

“This summer reading program is about more than books, it’s about opening doors to opportunity, imagination, and lifelong learning,” said Spring ISD Superintendent Dr. Kregg Cuellar. “When students continue reading throughout the summer, they strengthen critical literacy skills, build confidence, and stay connected to learning in meaningful ways. We want every Spring ISD student to return in the fall inspired, prepared, and ready to succeed.”

The Summer Reading Program arrives at a time when many educators continue emphasizing the importance of preventing “summer slide,” the learning loss that can happen when students step away from reading and academics for extended periods. Programs like Journey Into Reading help students in Eagle Landing maintain literacy skills while also encouraging independence and curiosity.

Flexible Reading Options for Spring ISD Students

One of the program’s biggest strengths is its flexibility. Students are not limited to traditional chapter books and can earn credit by reading eBooks, audiobooks, magazines and graphic novels. The approach allows students across different grade levels and reading abilities in Eagle Landing to participate in ways that feel engaging and accessible.

Families are also encouraged to take advantage of the resources and activities available through the Barbara Bush Branch Library throughout the summer. In addition to access to books and reading materials, students can attend educational events and activities to earn bonus points toward the program.

To receive participation credit for library events, students must have their reading passports stamped by a Barbara Bush Library staff member during each event.

Spring ISD officials say the program is designed not only to strengthen academic skills, but also to help students build positive associations with reading that can last long after summer ends.

Campus and District Recognition Planned for Top Readers

Elementary and middle school students will compete in separate divisions, with recognition awarded at both the campus and district levels.

Each Spring ISD campus will recognize one English winner and one Spanish winner for each grade span, highlighting the district’s continued support for bilingual literacy and inclusive learning opportunities that reflect the diverse families living in communities like Eagle Landing.

Those campus winners will then advance to district-level competition, where top scorers in each grade band and language category will be named district champions in August. Up to six district winners will ultimately be recognized.

The district hopes the friendly competition, combined with engaging summer events, will motivate students to stay active readers throughout the break while creating lasting memories with friends and family.

A Summer Tradition That Connects Learning and Community

For many Spring-area families, programs like Journey Into Reading offer more than academic support. They provide safe, welcoming spaces where children can gather, explore their interests and remain connected to their community during the summer months.

With the kickoff event just days away, Spring ISD families now have an opportunity to turn library visits, reading time and neighborhood conversations into part of a larger summer journey centered around imagination and discovery.
