Spring ISD Livestock Show & Fair Marks 75 Years of Student Growth, Scholarships and Community Impact in Houston Area

For many families in Spring ISD, the annual Livestock Show & Fair is more than a competition — it’s a reflection of the values, work ethic and opportunities that define the district.

Now celebrating its 75th anniversary, the Spring ISD Livestock Show & Fair brought together students, parents and community supporters April 9–11 at the Nagy Pavilion, highlighting how agricultural education programs continue to prepare students for life beyond the classroom. From livestock competitions to culinary and creative showcases, the event demonstrated how hands-on learning translates into real-world skills for students across North Houston.

At its core, the event reinforces what matters most locally: student development, scholarship opportunities and a community willing to invest in its next generation.

More Than a Livestock Show: How FFA, 4-H and FCCLA Shape Student Success

Organized by the Spring Tri-Club — a partnership between Spring ISD’s FFA (Future Farmers of America), 4-H and Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) programs — the fair reflects a broader commitment to career readiness and leadership development.

While livestock competitions remain a centerpiece, students also showcased artwork, baked goods and culinary creations, illustrating the wide range of pathways available through Spring ISD’s Career and Technical Education programs.

“These programs are about much more than competition,” district leaders emphasized through the event’s structure. They provide students with hands-on experience in agriculture, business, nutrition, veterinary science and leadership — all highly relevant skills in today’s workforce.

Leadership Highlights the Meaning Behind 75 Years of Growth

Spring ISD Superintendent Dr. Kregg Cuellar emphasized the importance of the milestone and the community support behind it.

“This 75-year tradition is a testament to what makes Spring ISD special: strong programs, dedicated students, and a community that shows up,” said Cuellar. “The commitment, discipline and pride on display here reflect the values we strive to instill in every student; preparing them not just for today, but for their future.”

That sense of continuity — balancing growth with purpose — has helped the event remain relevant for generations of students and families.

Real Investment in Students: Scholarships and Community Giving

Beyond ribbons and recognition, the Spring ISD Livestock Show & Fair continues to deliver measurable impact.

This year’s Superintendent’s Stampede auction raised $16,241, directly supporting student scholarships and future exhibitors. Since 2007, the buyers group has played a critical role in ensuring students have the financial backing to continue participating in agricultural programs.

The impact extends even further. Livestock purchased through the program is processed and donated to local nonprofits, creating a ripple effect that supports families across the community — a meaningful example of how student efforts translate into real community benefit.

A Legacy Built on Mentorship and Opportunity

For longtime supporters like Jana Gonzalez, former Spring ISD board member and First Vice President of the Spring Livestock Show, the event’s continued success is rooted in mentorship and early exposure.

"We have grown significantly over the years," Gonzalez said. “What has been very important however is that we’ve stayed involved with younger kids coming in, and showing them what they are capable of."

That early investment often begins months — even a year — in advance. Students dedicate significant time to raising animals, preparing projects and refining their skills, learning responsibility, time management and perseverance along the way.

"These kids have worked hard all year long," Gonzalez said. "Seeing their creativity win awards — it's just amazing."

Student Spotlight: First-Year Competitor Finds Early Success

For students like Sekai Smith, a freshman at Carl Wunsche Sr. High School, the fair represents both a challenge and an opportunity.

Competing in his first year through Spring ISD’s veterinary pathway, Smith raised a pig named Bacon and earned reserve champion honors — an achievement that speaks to the level of dedication required.

"I just feel honored to win second place in my first year, because most people can't even do that," Smith said. "It's just a stepping stone and I am coming for grand champion next year."

His experience reflects a broader trend seen across Spring ISD: students gaining confidence and setting higher goals through hands-on learning.

Building Life Skills That Extend Beyond the Classroom

Spring ISD Chief of Innovation and Student Support Services Dr. Michael Love emphasized that the event’s value goes far beyond competition results.

"It provides grit, and it trains them on patience," Love said. "Project-based learning, collaboration, and fortitude are all attributes that will make them great citizens when they graduate and great representatives of Spring ISD."

He also highlighted the critical role families play in making the event possible, from early morning animal care to year-round volunteer support.

“We cannot maximize opportunities for our students or help them reach their full potential without the support of our parents,” Love said. “This event is a powerful testament to that partnership.”

What Happens Next

As Spring ISD looks ahead, the success of the 75th anniversary event signals continued growth for its agricultural and career programs. With increasing student participation and sustained community support, the Livestock Show & Fair is expected to remain a cornerstone event for years to come.
