Special Pals Seeks Foster Homes for Pets As Freezing Weather in Houston Area Approaches

January 15 2025

With temperatures expected to plummet this weekend, Special Pals, a non-profit animal rescue in Houston, is asking for help from the community to foster pets, ensuring they remain warm and cared for during the freezing weather. Houston will see temperatures drop to around 39°F on Sunday, with Monday’s low potentially reaching 28°F, and wind chill factors making it feel as cold as 20°F. Katy is also forecasted to experience freezing temperatures with lows reaching 27°F and wind chills as low as 17°F. This cold front is expected to bring hard freezes, impacting the entire region, making it critical to provide safe shelter for vulnerable animals.

Special Pals, which has been dedicated to rescuing abandoned and neglected animals since 1979, is reaching out to animal lovers to open their homes to foster pets temporarily. The organization operates under a no-kill policy, providing medical care, rehabilitation, and educational programs aimed at promoting responsible pet ownership. Their mission is to find permanent, loving homes for the animals in their care, and fostering plays a vital role in this process.

“The need for temporary homes is especially urgent as we face freezing temperatures,” said a representative from Special Pals. “We have many animals, including puppies, kittens, and elderly pets, who are vulnerable to the cold. Fostering helps not only keep them safe and comfortable but also prepares them for their forever homes.”

Foster families are essential to ensuring that Special Pals can continue its mission of saving animals and providing them with the care they deserve. The organization covers all expenses for food, medical care, and supplies, and fosters are supported with necessary training and guidance. The fostering period can range from a few weeks to several months, depending on the animal’s needs.

Cold Weather Pet Safety Tips

As temperatures drop, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) offers these tips to help keep pets safe during cold weather:

  • Keep pets indoors when temperatures drop below 40°F.
  • Limit outdoor walks and activities to prevent frostbite and hypothermia.
  • Ensure pets have access to warm bedding and shelter.
  • Never leave pets in parked cars, as temperatures inside vehicles can drop quickly.
  • Consider using pet-safe ice melters to protect paws from chemicals.
  • If your pet has long hair, trim the hair around their paws to prevent ice buildup.
  • Keep your pets hydrated, even in winter, as dehydration can still occur.
  • For outdoor pets, provide insulated shelters and bedding to keep them warm.

By following these tips, pet parents can ensure their furry friends stay safe and comfortable during the cold snap.

“Fostering is one of the most rewarding experiences you can have,” said Special Pals’ foster coordinator. “You not only help an animal stay safe but also create space in the shelter for others in need. It’s a win-win situation for the animals, the foster families, and the entire community.”

Special Pals is looking for foster homes for a variety of animals, including pregnant dogs, nursing mothers, orphaned puppies and kittens, and older pets or those with special medical needs. In addition to providing a warm home, foster parents are encouraged to take heartwarming photos and share their experiences, helping to increase the visibility of adoptable pets.
