Southwest Airlines Chooses Austin for One of Its First-Ever Airport Lounges, Opening Planned for 2027
For Austin travelers who regularly pass through Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, one of the biggest airlines at AUS is preparing to offer something it has never offered anywhere before: its own airport lounge.
Southwest Airlines announced Sept. 2 that Austin-Bergstrom International Airport will be one of four airports nationwide to receive the airline’s first-ever lounges, placing Austin alongside Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu and Nashville International Airport.
Construction has already begun on the initial four locations, with Southwest expecting to welcome the first lounge guests in late 2027. At least seven additional lounges are planned in high-demand business and leisure markets over the following several years.
For Austin, the announcement is especially noteworthy because Southwest is deeply woven into daily travel at AUS. City airport data showed Southwest accounting for 43% of scheduled airline seat capacity at Austin-Bergstrom in February 2026, substantially more than any other individual carrier. During the first 11 months of 2025, more than 8.1 million Southwest passengers traveled through AUS.
What the New Southwest Lounge at Austin Airport Will Offer
Southwest is developing the lounge network in partnership with Chase, combining the airline’s customer-service approach with elements of the existing Chase Sapphire Reserve Lounge Network.
The company said the lounges are planned to feature sophisticated design, locally inspired food, high-quality amenities and travel benefits similar to those available through Chase’s Sapphire Reserve lounge program. Specific details about the design, size, food offerings and exact location of the Austin Southwest lounge have not yet been announced.
For travelers accustomed to Southwest’s historically straightforward approach to air travel, the addition represents a significant expansion of what happens before passengers ever step aboard the aircraft.
“Southwest Airlines has built one of the most trusted brands in travel by delivering authentic Hospitality that Customers value. Our lounges will be a natural extension of that experience, offering Customers a place to relax and experience the Southwest brand in a new way,” Southwest Airlines Executive Vice President and Chief Customer & Brand Officer Tony Roach said. “The introduction of a lounge network represents a strategic investment in Rapid Rewards and deepens our 30-year partnership with Chase.”
How Travelers Will Get Into the Southwest Lounge
Access to the new Southwest airport lounges will be connected initially to a new premium Southwest Rapid Rewards credit card issued by Chase, which is scheduled to launch in 2027.
Southwest has not yet announced the card’s annual fee, full benefits package or other potential ways travelers could enter the lounges.
That means Austin passengers interested in using the new lounge will have more details to watch for as the planned late-2027 opening gets closer.
The lounge strategy also puts Southwest more directly into a part of the airline business long associated with premium travel. Airport lounges have increasingly become places where passengers can eat, work, recharge devices or simply step away from crowded terminal areas before a flight.
At an airport as heavily traveled as AUS, that additional option could be meaningful for frequent Southwest flyers, business travelers and passengers with longer waits between flights.
Why Austin Makes Sense for Southwest’s First Lounge Network
Austin’s inclusion among just four initial Southwest lounge locations reflects the airline’s sizable presence at Austin-Bergstrom.
Southwest remains the largest carrier at AUS by scheduled seat share, and its Austin network includes service to destinations across Texas and the country. The airport’s 2026 nonstop destination information lists Southwest service to cities including Dallas Love Field, Denver, Chicago Midway, Columbus, El Paso, Fort Lauderdale, Harlingen and Houston Hobby, among others.
The decision also arrives as Austin-Bergstrom continues to accommodate passenger demand and a changing mix of airline service. More than 19.7 million passengers traveled through AUS during the first 11 months of 2025, according to City of Austin airport statistics.
Against that backdrop, Southwest’s investment gives Austin travelers another sign that airlines see the Central Texas market as important enough to support experiences extending beyond simply adding flights and destinations.
From Three Texas Cities to a Major U.S. Airline
Southwest’s latest investment in Austin carries a distinctly Texas connection.
The Dallas-based airline began flying on June 18, 1971, with three Boeing 737 aircraft serving Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. Its original model emphasized frequent, affordable point-to-point travel and helped build Southwest into one of the country’s largest domestic carriers.
More than five decades later, Southwest operates at 121 airports across 12 countries and carried more than 134 million customers in 2025, according to the company. Southwest also says it carries more passengers flying nonstop within the United States than any other airline, based on U.S. Department of Transportation origin-and-destination data through the fourth quarter of 2025.
The Austin lounge is therefore more than another airport amenity. It marks a notable evolution for an airline whose identity was built around making air travel simple and broadly accessible.
What Austin Travelers Should Watch for Next
For now, Austin passengers do not need to change anything about the way they travel through AUS. The first Southwest lounges are not expected to begin welcoming guests until late 2027.
Between now and then, key details remain to be announced, including exactly where the Southwest lounge will be located inside Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, what Austin-inspired food or design elements it could feature, its operating hours and the complete access rules tied to Southwest’s upcoming premium Rapid Rewards credit card.
What is already clear is that Austin will have a front-row seat as Southwest enters the airport lounge business for the first time in its history.
For the many Central Texas residents who already choose Southwest for flights from Austin, the familiar trip through AUS could look noticeably different by the end of next year — with a new place to eat, work, recharge or simply settle in before boarding.
