Severe Weather and Freezing Temperatures Expected in Houston This Weekend

January 04 2025

Houston residents are bracing for a sharp cold front this Sunday that will bring a mix of severe weather and freezing temperatures. According to the National Weather Service – Houston/Galveston, the cold front will arrive with strong storms and a significant drop in temperatures, which could last through the week. With freezing conditions expected, it’s essential for Houstonians to take steps to prepare their homes, themselves, and their pets for the cold snap.

What to Expect: Severe Weather and Freezing Temperatures

The cold front pushing into Houston on Sunday will bring the potential for severe weather, including scattered thunderstorms and possible tornadoes, particularly north of I-10 and east of I-45. The National Weather Service has issued a slight risk (level 2 of 5) for severe weather in these areas, with damaging winds and brief tornadoes as the primary threats.

Once the cold front passes, much colder air will follow, bringing temperatures that could dip below freezing as early as Sunday night. Overnight lows are expected to range between the mid-20s and low 30s, and the cold temperatures will likely persist through next week. While daytime temperatures may rise into the 40s, several nights of freezing weather are expected, with Monday and Tuesday nights presenting the highest risk for widespread sub-freezing conditions.

Additionally, there is a small chance of wintry precipitation mid-week, but the National Weather Service notes that the likelihood of snow or ice is low. Still, it’s essential to stay updated on forecasts as conditions evolve.

How to Prepare for Freezing Temperatures in Houston

With freezing temperatures expected, it’s important for residents to take several precautions to ensure their safety and comfort during the cold snap. Here are key tips for preparing for the freeze:

  1. Protect Pipes: One of the most important preparations for freezing weather is to protect outdoor pipes. Insulate exposed pipes, disconnect garden hoses, and let faucets drip to prevent them from freezing and bursting.

  2. Check Heating Systems: Ensure that your home’s heating system is working properly. If you rely on space heaters, use them safely, keeping them away from flammable materials, and never leave them unattended. In the event of a power outage, never place a generator inside your home. Get more generator tips from FEMA here.

  3. Prepare Your Vehicle: If you must drive during freezing weather, make sure your vehicle is prepared. Check your tires, battery, and windshield wipers, and ensure you have emergency supplies, such as blankets, water, and snacks.

  4. Stock Up on Essentials: In case of power outages, it’s important to have enough food, water, and medications for at least 72 hours. Stock up on supplies like candles, batteries, and warm clothing to stay comfortable in case of an emergency.

  5. Watch for Hazardous Road Conditions: While snow or ice is unlikely, freezing rain can create slippery roads. Drive carefully and stay home if conditions become hazardous.

Houston SPCA Tips for Keeping Outdoor Pets Safe in Freezing Weather

As the temperatures drop, pet owners should be especially mindful of their outdoor pets. Freezing temperatures can be dangerous for animals, so the Houston SPCA has provided several important tips to keep pets safe during the cold snap:

  1. Bring Pets Indoors: The best way to protect pets from the cold is to bring them indoors. Outdoor pets, especially those with short fur or existing health conditions, are at risk of hypothermia and frostbite in freezing temperatures.

  2. Provide Shelter for Outdoor Pets: If you must leave pets outside, they need a sheltered, dry space away from the wind. Ensure that any shelter is elevated off the cold ground and filled with blankets, towels, or hay to keep pets warm and dry.

  3. More Food and Water: Cold weather increases pets’ energy needs, so be sure to feed them 25-50% more than usual. Fresh water should always be available, and plastic bowls are recommended as metal bowls can freeze or cause pets’ tongues to stick.

  4. Check for Signs of Distress: Watch for signs of hypothermia, including shivering, weakness, or lethargy. If you notice any of these symptoms, immediately bring your pet inside and contact a veterinarian.

  5. Keep Cats Safe: Outdoor cats are at risk of hiding under car hoods for warmth. To prevent injury, tap on the car hood before starting the engine. Never leave pets unattended in parked vehicles, as the inside of a car can quickly become dangerously cold.

  6. Caring for Farm Animals: Horses and livestock should have access to a barn or shelter to escape the cold wind. Ensure they have plenty of hay and water, and check water troughs frequently to ensure they haven’t frozen. Blankets may be necessary for some animals, depending on the temperature and weather conditions.

How to Report Animal Cruelty or Distress

The Houston SPCA reminds the public to report any instances of animals left in freezing conditions. In 2021, they responded to an incident where one dog perished after being left outside in freezing temperatures. If you witness animals in distress or cruelty, call the Houston SPCA at 713-869-7722 or report it online at HoustonSPCA.org.

Stay Informed and Prepared

With severe weather and freezing temperatures forecast for Houston this weekend, residents are urged to stay informed and prepared. By taking proactive steps to protect your home, family, and pets, you can safely navigate the cold snap. Keep an eye on local weather updates, follow safety tips, and ensure your outdoor pets are safe and warm throughout the freeze.
