Seven Lakes Junior High Chamber Orchestra Wins Texas Honor Orchestra Competition, Earns 2027 TMEA Performance
For students in the Seven Lakes Junior High School Chamber Orchestra, months of rehearsals, careful listening and teamwork have led to a milestone few young musicians ever reach.
The Katy ISD ensemble placed first in the annual Texas Music Educators Association Honor Orchestra Competition, earning an invitation to perform at the 2027 TMEA Clinic & Convention in San Antonio. The achievement places the Seven Lakes Junior High Chamber Orchestra among the top public-school orchestras in Texas and gives its students an opportunity to perform before music educators and musicians from across the country.
Seven Lakes Junior High Musicians Earn Statewide Recognition
The Texas Music Educators Association Honor Orchestra Competition is considered one of the leading measures of excellence in public-school music education. Ensembles advance through a demanding process that includes extensive screening, blind judging and state-level qualification.
For the Seven Lakes Junior High musicians, finishing first represents more than a competition result. It reflects the discipline required to learn challenging music, respond to a conductor, listen closely to fellow performers and build a unified sound as an ensemble.
“Performing at the TMEA Clinic & Convention is a dream realized for many young musicians,” Katy ISD Executive Director of Fine Arts Damon Archer said. “These students have demonstrated exceptional artistry, commitment and teamwork throughout the competition process. Their success is a testament to the strength of Katy ISD's fine arts programs and the outstanding educators who inspire them every day.”
The school’s Spartan Symphony Orchestra also earned statewide recognition by being named a finalist in the TMEA Full Orchestra Competition, adding another notable accomplishment for the Seven Lakes Junior High fine arts program.
Students Headed to the 2027 TMEA Clinic & Convention
As the winning Honor Orchestra, the Seven Lakes Junior High Chamber Orchestra will perform at the TMEA Clinic & Convention in February 2027. Held annually in San Antonio, the convention is recognized as one of the world’s largest music education gatherings and regularly attracts more than 30,000 attendees.
The event brings together students, teachers, conductors, professional musicians and music education leaders for performances, workshops and professional development. For junior high students, performing at the convention offers a rare opportunity to take the stage before an audience deeply familiar with the preparation and skill required to produce an award-winning orchestral performance.
The invitation also gives Katy-area families and educators another reason to celebrate the role of fine arts education in student development. Orchestra programs can help young musicians strengthen confidence, patience, collaboration and personal responsibility while creating friendships centered on a shared goal.
A Proud Moment for Katy ISD Fine Arts
Seven Lakes Junior High School’s first-place finish reflects the work of students, orchestra directors, families and the broader Katy ISD fine arts community. Behind the final performance are countless rehearsals, individual practice sessions and moments when students learned to adjust, improve and support one another.
For the community, the award is a reminder that student achievement takes many forms. Academic success may happen in a classroom, athletic success may unfold on a field, and musical success can begin quietly with a bow drawn across a string before growing into a performance worthy of a statewide stage.
The Seven Lakes Junior High Chamber Orchestra will now prepare for its February 2027 appearance in San Antonio, where the students will represent their school, Katy ISD and the Katy community at one of the most respected events in music education.
