Seven CFISD Music Ensembles Win 2022 Mark of Excellence Awards

Seven CFISD music ensembles were named winners of The Foundation for Music Education’s 2022 Mark of Excellence and Citation of Excellence awards in September.

Four were awarded as National Winners: Spillane Middle School symphonic winds band, Cook Middle School varsity treble choir, Spillane tenor/bass choir and Bridgeland High School choral. The Anthony Middle School chamber orchestra was a Commended Winner, while the Cypress Woods High School symphonic winds band and Spillane symphonic band were both Citation of Excellence winners.

The Foundation for Music Education, an organization dedicated to the support and advancement of music education through scholarships and other worthwhile projects, presents the Mark of Excellence and Citation of Excellence awards each fall. The project seeks to recognize and award outstanding achievement in performance. Mark of Excellence awards honors high school and middle school bands, choirs and orchestras across the nation, while Citation of Excellence awards honors non-varsity ensembles.

The top 25 percent of entries are recognized as national winners or citation winners, while the next quarter are commended winners.

CFISD’s winners were selected among 375 entries.

“I am very thankful for the outstanding work that was done by our staff and students to receive these ‘Mark of Excellence’ recognitions from The Foundation for Music Education.” said John Morrison, CFISD director of fine arts. “Our CFISD music staff continues to ‘Bring Out the Best’ and this recognition is certainly appreciated.”

The Spillane Middle School symphonic winds, directed by John Barton, was named a National Winner in the Mark of Excellence/National Wind Band Honors project. The ensemble was a National Winner in 2018.

The awards are presented each fall by the Foundation for Music Education, with the project seeking to recognize outstanding achievement in performance by high school and middle school bands, choirs and orchestras across the nation.

The Cook Middle School varsity treble choir, directed by True Hernandez, was named a National Winner in the Mark of Excellence/National Choral Honors project.

The Bridgeland High School chorale, directed by Christopher Fiorini, was named a National Winner in the Mark of Excellence/National Choir Honors project.
